About Aqqaluk Trust
Aqqaluk Trust is a 501(c)(3) non-profit private foundation. The Aqqaluk Trust was founded in 1989 in honor of Robert Aqqaluk Newlin, Sr., one of the great Iñupiat leaders. The foundation first provided scholarship funding for eligible applicants seeking training or pursuing their secondary education.
Since its inception, Aqqaluk Trust has grown and now provides more Iñupiaq language and cultural resources. Aqqaluk Trust currently focuses on three major areas related to the language, culture, and education of the Iñupiat people of northwest Alaska.
Summary
The Iñupiatun Adult Fluency Program Manager is responsible for all aspects of the Uqapiaqta Program. The Program Manager is responsible for designing, developing, and implementing Uqapiaqta – a year-long adult Iñupiaq immersion program leading to conversational proficiency in Iñupiaq for a cohort of approximately six adult learners. The Program Manager will oversee all aspects of Uqapiaqta, including additional program staff, under the supervision of thePresident/CEO..
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
§Design and manage a year-long, cohort-based program that leads to conversational proficiency in Iñupiaq as spoken in the NANA region, using best practices for adult indigenous language revitalization programs
§Deliver (teach) curriculum to language learner cohort, together with speakers and other teachers identified by the program manager
§Manage and supervise any staff, interns, and contractors working on development and implementation of Uqapiaqta
§Manage Uqapiaqta program budget with oversight of Inuulailiqput Director
§Work with Iñupiaq speakers and learners to develop curriculum for Uqapiaqta that is inclusive of all NANA region dialects, with guidance and review from the Iñupiaq Language Commission
§Oversee arrangement of logistical needs of learner cohort (housing, subsistence activities, and associated travel & transportation)
§Develop and maintain partnerships with individuals and organizations to advise on and/or share responsibility for Uqapiaqta development and implementation
§Oversee identification and/or development of an integrated program component on healing from the trauma of historical language loss
§Evaluate and improve program curriculum on an ongoing basis
§Provide input and content for Aqqaluk Trust fundraising efforts related to Uqapiaqta
§As available, assist other Aqqaluk Trust programs with Iñupiaq language content
Qualifications
§Familiarity and comfort with NANA region communities, land, and varieties of Iñupiaq
§Experience and/or training in adult language immersion methods (indigenous language context preferred)
§Experience teaching Iñupiaq to adults strongly preferred
§Demonstrated ability to work with elder Iñupiaq language speakers
§Experience organizing group subsistence activities and outdoor trips
§Valid Alaska driver’s license and a driving record acceptable to Aqqaluk Trust’s insurance carrier preferred
§Applicants who are Iñupiaq learners must have at least two years of experience studying Iñupiaq language or working in positions with significant exposure to Iñupiaq language. Conversational Iñupiaq speaking ability preferred

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Weather
Most work will be done indoors, but job will also require outdoor duties. May occasionally be exposed to harsh outdoor weather conditions including rain, cold, wind, and snow.
Noise level
Quiet to Moderate
Environment
Collaborative office environment with interaction in person, over the phone, and by email. Also classroom environment where program manager is in a teaching role. The pace of the work environment is moderate, with occasional periods of higher intensity.
Travel
Up to 20% of the time, both in and out of region. Must be willing to travel by multiple methods including boat and small plane, and stay in accommodations of varying types including camps.
Physical requirements
Must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Must be physically capable of completing common tasks associated with spending time in the country. Must constantly be able to sit, stand, walk, use hands and arms. Will occasionally be required to stoop, kneel and crouch.
