Works in conjunction with the anesthesiologist and the nurse anesthetist to prepare patients for anesthesia and surgery. Cares for the Anesthesia equipment. Also responsible for collecting intraoperative shed blood for auto-transfusion.

Department Specific Responsibilities:
Responsible for checking all rooms at start of the day and assisting anesthesiologist and nurse anesthetist:
Open scavenger system.
Check anesthesia machine drawer for equipment; fill and turn off vaporizers when necessary; change soda lime when necessary; ensure proper connections; make sure the O2 and N2O tanks are full.
Check equipment cart for drugs and equipment.
Check monitor for cleanliness, cables, and set up electrodes, oxi-sensor.
Clean anesthesia machine.
Restock drawers in anesthesia machines, set up endotracheal equipment.
Clean equipment cart.
Restock drawers and monitoring equipment.
Clean cart and machine in each room and set up machines at close of shift. Turn off scavenger system.
Preparation of Patient:Set-ups include: suction, I.V., endotracheal tube, central venous pressure, blood transfusion, arterial pressure, Swan Ganz catheter, cardiac output.
Greet and identify patient.
Attach monitor leads, oxisensor, blood pressure cuff
Responsible for assisting any anesthesiologist or anesthetist, while starting I.V., inducing endotracheal tube, central venous pressure, arterial line, Swan Ganz catheter, cardiac output, positioning patient, protecting patient, e.g. eyes, limbs, etc., holding patient for spinal and epidurals, ventilating patient under supervision of anesthesiologist, assist during emergencies e.g. cardiac arrest.
Responsible for the cell-saving procedure
Check the schedule for the ordered cell-savers the afternoon before.
Set up the machine with the appropriate disposable components.
Check the suction in the room, and check the operation of the machine before the case starts.
Connect the suction tubing from the surgical field to the cell-saver machine at the beginning of the case.
Process the blood and give it to the anesthetist to return to the patient.
Disconnect the machine from the sterile field, discard the soft-ware, clean the machine, and calculate blood loss.
Report any malfunction of the machine to the anesthesia nurse manager.
Plans time away from work appropriately
Arrives and leaves at designated times.
Uses unplanned earned time appropriately.(Based on full time hours. Standards are pro-rated for part-time employees based on agreed hours.
Performs other related duties as required.
