Job Summary: The Agricultural Intern position is primarily responsible for assisting the Ranch Manager/Ranch Foreman implement the diversified operational plan consistent with the Choctaw Nation Agriculture Department’s overarching mission and strategic plan.
Our Summer Intern Program is an 8-week temporary, paid program that runs from June 3rd - July 26th, 2024. This position pays $13 per hour.
Primary Tasks:
Animal Husbandry practices to perform responsibly and as directed:Monitor and provide supplemental feed, mineral and water to all livestock;
Assist with herd health, routine processing, calf pairing and transport activities;
Identify unhealthy animals, when necessary, administer approved treatment program;
Land stewardship practices to perform responsibly and as directed:Monitor forage availability and assist grazing management/utilization efforts;
Perform routine (ex. chemical, mechanical and prescribed fire) pasture maintenance;
Provide property upkeep (i.e. fence repair/construction, mowing, trimming, litter removal, painting, etc.) and security;
Communication and AwarenessProvide clear communication (written and verbal) to all stakeholders;
Professionally represent the Choctaw Nation at all times;
Provide and maintain all requested records (i.e feed sheet, hay/livestock inventory, pasture, etc.)
Other appropriate duties to be performed as assignedRequired Education, Skills and Experience:
MINIMUM
Choctaw CDIB cardholder or Choctaw Tribal Member
Currently attending an accredited college, university or post-secondary educational institution.
Proven team player, willing to work collaboratively with utmost professionalism
Proven work ethic with willingness to learn/adopt applicable trade skills, innovation and technology.
Modest knowledge of livestock care, stockmanship and husbandry
Recognized ability to be punctual, work weekends and flexible hours
Established experience and willingness to perform “other” related duties (i.e. fence construction/repair, basic plumbing, excavation, road maintenance, etc.)
Confirmed ability and motivation to safely perform all duties.
Operate in a diverse environment (i.e. wet, humid, cold, etc. ) and perform basic duties (i.e. lift 100 pounds, work near moving parts, etc.)
Valid driver’s license
