About the Department
With a bed capacity of 71 beds, the NICU in Comer Children\'s Hospitalis one of the largest Level III NICUs in Chicago and a major referralcenter for the sickest newborn infants with the most complex conditions.It has close to 900 admissions per year accounting for nearly 19,000patient bed-days. In collaboration with the Maternal-Fetal Service,Neonatology runs the University of Chicago Perinatal Network with over10 affiliated community hospitals. A state-of-the-art facility, the NICUoffers critically-ill infants with innovative mode of interventionsincluding ECMO which can be provided for up to three infants at a timewith a special group of technicians supplementing our NICU nursingstaff; nitric oxide treatment for babies with hypoxic respiratoryfailure; oscillator support for babies with severe air leak syndrome;in-dwelling gas monitoring to minimize the use of phlebotomy; on demandEEG, and the capability for 24-hour EEG monitoring.
Job Summary
The Advanced Practice Provider provides direct patient care, incollaboration with consulting physicians and the multidisciplinaryhealth team in accordance with privileges approved by the credentialscommittee, to include identification, management, and/or referral ofhealth problems.
Responsibilities
Provide direct patient care and formulate plan of care incollaboration with physician, nursing staff, and themultidisciplinary health team in accordance with privileges approvedby the Credentials Committee.Communicate follow-up plan/disposition with the follow-up healthcare provider.Prescribe and evaluate pharmacological therapies according toprotocol.Attend both high and low risk deliveries as needed.Initiate CPR and perform therapeutic techniques to stabilize acompromised infant in the delivery room, NICU, emergency room andreferring hospitals as needed.Stabilize and transport patients as needed.Demonstrate in-depth understanding of current professional and legaltrends, concepts and issues related to practice.Identify educational needs of family members and assist withteaching as appropriate.Ensure that appropriate systems and resources are in place tomaintain established standards of care.Participate in self and peer evaluation to improve quality of care.Participate in the development, review and evaluation of policiesand procedures.Participate in developing and implementing QI monitoring.Participate in providing in-service and outreach education program.Act as resource for clinical skills for staff on or of the unit.May participate in clinical research projects conducted bysupervising physicians.Serve as preceptor to APP students.Evaluates goals and outcomes taking into account thebenefit-versus-burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness forthe patient, family and the organization.Develops diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions neededto achieve the goals and outcomes of the patient\'s plan of care.Has a deep understanding and response to adverse drug reactions,with special attention to vulnerable populations such as infants,children, pregnant and lactating women, or older adults. Developsand coordinates APP training and professional developmentactivities.Performs other related work as needed.Minimum Qualifications
Education:
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree from anaccredited school/college.

Preferred Qualifications
Education:
Advanced nursing degree from an accredited school/college ofnursing.Completion of approved NNP training.Experience:
1-2 years of clinical experience in a related area of specialty.Licenses and Certifications:
NCC certification as a neonatal nurse practitioner.Ability to obtain Illinois advanced practice nurse license by startdate.Current license as registered nurse.Once licensed, apply for a mid-level practitioner controlledsubstance license and DEA number.Preferred Competencies
