  Responsibilities

  Position Summary:

  The College Center for Advising Services (CCAS) is a centralized academic advising office staffed by a team of dedicated professional advisors whose work is designed to support the academic success of undergraduates in the College. The Academic Counselor will serve as a College Advisor managing a caseload of assigned students in Arts and Sciences, and assist with one or more major operations of the Advising Center. College Advisors are responsible for an assigned caseload of advisees over a four-year period from matriculation to graduation. They provide advisement and support around course planning, educational goals, career aspirations, college policies, and opportunities for engaging in campus life. Advisors guide students through the major declaration process, answers general questions regarding financial aid, and monitor progress toward degree completion. Advisors proactively assist students who are experiencing academic difficulties and help students navigate policies relating to academic probation and leave of absence.

  This position will assist with the management and oversight of the CCAS Peer Advising Program, serve as liaison to the First Year Fellows Program, serve as a co-instructor for UR 101, and oversee the Advising Council Newsletter.

  Specific Responsibilities:

  Serve as a College Advisor:

  Advises a caseload of assigned students in Arts and Sciences and provides information about program planning, academic resources, special academic opportunities, rules and policies, financial aid, and graduation requirements

  Guides students on the development of four-year academic plans and connects students to academic and career development experiences and opportunities such as study abroad, undergraduate research, internships, and co-curricular activities

  Effectively communicates and explains academic policies and procedures to students, parents, colleagues, and other stakeholders

  Provides support to students in academic difficulty and serves as a primary resource for students placed on academic probation

  Connects students with faculty to explore academic interests and opportunities

  Maintains contact with faculty and departmental staff regarding advising programs and consults on individual cases as required

  Meets with students through individual appointments, drop-in advising, group advising, both in person and on a remote basis

  Assists with outreach to students who are on a Leave of Absence

  Collaborates on campus-wide advising initiatives

  Attends committee meetings based on interest and department needs

  Participates in academic action process each term, makes recommendations about academic status, and meets regularly with a caseload of students on academic probation.

  Guides students in preparation of petitions, proposals, and appeals; refers students to faculty or other offices for specialized help

  Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities as a member of the larger College Advisor community on campus.

  CCAS Peer Advising Program

  Assists the CCAS Assistant Director with oversight and management of the Peer Advising program.

  Recruits, hires, trains, and supervises undergraduate student peer advisors, maintaining their credentials and professional development.

  Manages Peer Advising social media platforms.

  First-year Fellows Program

  Serves as the CCAS liaison to the First-Year Fellows, a program of upper-class students who work to mentor/coach first-year students living in the residence halls.

  Participates in February/March selection & August training of First-Year Fellows as well as providing support throughout the year.

  Assists Fellows with the Food for Thought programming series which connects faculty to first-year residential communities

  Serves as primary liaison between Fellows and CCAS with particular attention to peer advising, registration, academic deadlines, policies and resources.

  Helps to create a culture that supports Fellows in developing a student-centered approach to promote academic exploration among first-year students.

  Co-Instructor Early Connection Opportunity

  Co-instructor for the UR 101 class for students participating in the Early Connection Opportunity Program

  Serve as a member of the ECO Planning Committee

  Advising Council Newsletter Designer and Editor

  Collect information and events from College Advising Offices to promote within the College Advising Network.

  Design newsletter, publish, and distribute to subscribers. Attend weekly Advising Council meetings.

  Other duties as assigned.

  Requirements:

  Bachelor's Degree required

  Master’s Degree preferred

  Two years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience required

  Excellent organization, time-management, writing ability required, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.

  Understand college student development and demonstrate the skills needed to support and advise students required.

  Demonstrated commitment to and experience working with diverse students required.

  Pay Range

  Pay Range: $20.38 - $28.56 Hourly

  The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
