Duties and Responsibilities

Salary Range: $50,000.00 – $55,000.00

Care for students (juniors, seniors, and transfer students in the School of Communication) through individual academic advising sessions, imparting a working knowledge of degree requirements and opportunities for students to achieve their academic, career, and life goals.

Assist, challenge, and support students in identifying and clarifying academic, career, and life goals and offer appropriate motivation and encouragement.

Be a proactive and constructive participant within an advising team dedicated to student success.

Accurately and efficiently communicate transfer credit and remaining degree requirements (Core, school-specific, and major requirements) for a timely graduation using online and off-line resources.

Understand, convey, and implement academic policies, procedures, and protocols to students, parents, faculty, and other stakeholders, while upholding FERPA requirements and the highest ethical standards.

Assist students in resolving administrative issues related to their academic records and assist with the various duties related to course registration issues.

Maintain and update student records, such as meeting notes, records relating to degree progress, correspondence, and other documentation when appropriate.

Prepare, deliver, and review graduation audits and audit checks for caseload of advisees.

Identify, monitor, and provide guidance to students on academic probation. Make probation and dismissal recommendations.

Refer students directly to appropriate campus and off-campus resources to support their academic success.

Assist with initiatives on a departmental and inter-departmental level that support persistence through graduation.

Present workshops on topics such as academic planning, transfer-student transitions, and student life in the SoC.

Work with School of Communication program directors and administrative staff to ensure accuracy and consistency in communication of program requirements.

Assist with the planning and implementation of advising programs and outreach including new-student orientation, academic probation advising, and academic alerts.

Create forms and other processes to improve graduation audits and other aspects of using LOCUS to streamline office procedures.

Articulate and support the vision and the mission of the university.

Meet regularly with prospective students and their families.

Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to a fast-paced, changing environment where responsibilities and duties may frequently change.

Represent SoC on Undergraduate Advising Council, as well as various SoC committees.

Some weekend and evening hours are required.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and/or Work Experience

Master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Counseling or related field required and one to two years of related experience.

Qualifications

Academic advising, transfer student services, and orientation experience at a four-year institution.

Ability to work effectively with undergraduate students, parents, colleagues, faculty, and deans.

Demonstrate knowledge of the SoC curriculum, program offerings, policies and procedures.

Experience in communication fields or completion of communication coursework.

Highly developed interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills that enable the Academic Advisor to adequately assess students’ academic needs and guide them to the appropriate university resources.

Ability to readily provide empathic, compassionate, consistent, accurate, developmental, student-focused, and honest advising.

Extraordinary attention to detail and proficiency in keeping accurate student records.

Demonstrated ability to work constructively in teams and alone, as well as collaborate across departments.

A commitment to academic excellence, service that promotes justice, values-based leadership, global awareness, and diversity.

A commitment to social justice, inclusion, and multicultural competency.

Ability to embrace, promote, and articulate the University’s Jesuit Catholic identity.

Ability to work effectively with undergraduate students in a holistic manner with an enthusiasm for providing student-centered services in the Ignatian tradition.

Certificates/Credentials/Licenses

Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, College Student Personnel, Counseling or related field and one to two years of related experience.

Computer Skills

Advanced knowledge of MS Office Suite, proficiency with Internet and email applications, Adobe, online survey tools (Qualtrics), Award Management systems (BlackBaud)
