  Position Summary:

  The Academic Advisor's main function in the Office of Academic Advising (OAA) is to provide accurate and timely academic advising to all first-year freshmen, incoming transfer students, and students in transition from one major to another at the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

  Essential Functions:

  Assist the Director and Associate Director in the facilitation of academic advising across the University.

  Serve as a primary academic advisor to first year undergraduate (UG) students.

  Assist UG students with major selection, course selection, and registration process.

  Communicate accurate and timely information to UG students and share with them knowledge regarding institutional, departmental, and major policies, procedures, and requirements.

  Track university first-time full-time student retention and progress toward graduation through the Navigate system run by the Educational Advisory Board (EAB).

  Provide appropriate interventions and resources to help UG students become successful.

  Document advising contacts (in person, email, or by phone) through Navigate.

  Assist first-year freshmen and incoming UG transfer students with making a successful transition to the University, through relationship building and efficient advising assistance and direct them to appropriate courses, resources, and programs.

  Collaborate with faculty and various academic departments to create programming and events for UG students (each academic advisor within OAA will have a program he/she oversees).

  Instruct and facilitate freshmen seminar course(s) each fall and spring term.

  Assist in the development, planning, and implementation of academic advising services for first-year UG students.

  Facilitate weekly meetings with first-year students in their second term at NJIT, and on probation. Advisors will be creating a document stating the goals and purpose of education for the student to complete.

  Oversee programming that they have been assigned to (i.e., PACE, NAVIGATE, and PALS).

  Additional Functions:

  Attend UG transfer student instant decision days and build on relationships with community college faculty, staff and prospective students.

  Represent OAA at Admission and Orientation events.

  Work with and supervise student workers, known as OAA Peer Advisor Liaisons (PALs) & support them with front line advising student issues/questions.

  Participate in professional development and training activities and should submit proposals and present papers at regional and national conferences.

  Other related duties, as assigned.

  Prerequisite Qualifications:

  Master’s degree in higher education, educational leadership, student development, or another related field of study.

  One (1) year of related experience in an academic advising office or working closely with academic departments and students in higher education.

  At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.

  Preferred Qualifications:

  Experience with Banner 9, EAB’s Navigate, and DegreeWorks.

  Applicant preferably can demonstrate knowledge of developmental academic advising methodologies, modern and comprehensive student advising technology, such as the EAB Navigate system, and assessment tools and methods to gauge the impacts of programs on student success.

  Applicant will also preferably, possess excellent listening, written, and verbal communication skills, as well as demonstrated ability and willingness to work both as a team member and the ability to work independently. Also, be able to demonstrate initiative and follow-through skills; tact, diplomacy, and judgment in dealing with students, parents, faculty, and administrators.

  Applicant will preferably be detail oriented and demonstrate ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
