  POSITION DETAILS

  The Academic Advising Specialist will report to an Academic Advising Manager. The Academic Advising Specialist will contribute to the development and implementation of a holistic, wrap-around advising model for first year and continuing students and will help to identify and create high impact academic advising practices more generally. The Academic Advising Specialist will focus on early engagement with first year students. The Academic Advising Specialist will play an important role in identifying critical milestones and transitions for Hunter students in collaboration with other members of the advising leadership team and will advise students regarding all aspects of their curriculum. In addition to the CUNY Title Overview, the Academic Advising Specialist will be responsible for the following duties:

  Advises an assigned caseload of students using a holistic and proactive approach.

  Works closely with various student affairs offices to plan, implement and execute the first year, new student orientation process.

  Assists in preloading and/or preregistering all incoming first year students.

  Serves as a member of working groups such as orientation, programming and retention initiatives.

  Administers programming for first year students and integrates best practices that support increased retention and graduation rates such as credit momentum, timely major declaration, and connection to campus resources and opportunities.

  Develops first year advising experience in collaboration with other advising leaders and Student Affairs offices to promote increased student engagement, learning and success among first year students.

  Assists in recruiting and training of part time staff dedicated to peer advising and front desk reception.

  Conducts group-advising programs for first year students and helps promote and coordinate other efforts from advisors to initiate group advising programs for first years.

  Assists in coordinating involvement with first year experience of other areas such as faculty/academic departments, Counseling and Wellness, The Learning Centers, Pre-Professional advising, and Student Life, among others.

  Collaborates on and maintains an engaging first year advising communication plan and schedules of first year advising programs.

  Assists the Director and Academic Advising Managers on the ongoing development and assessment of first year advising learning outcomes.

  Collaborates with Office of Financial Aid in assisting first year students in understanding and accessing financial aid and resources and developing longer term financial plans.

  Manages the summer scholarship project.

  Supervises other staff members where applicable.

  Actively promotes accessibility and visibility of advising through public programs and online presence. Advisor is expected to have staff photo and biography on website, and engage in Skype advising, chat rooms, social media, videos, and online tutorials.

  QUALIFICATIONS

  Bachelor's degree and four years' related experience required.

  PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS

  A Master's degree is preferred.

  The preferred candidate will have excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational, and time-management skills, as well as a strong work ethic and commitment for success.

  Occasional evenings or weekends may be required.

  Ensures students are provided with consistent, accurate, and prompt advising services, coordinating with academic departments

  Develops orientation programs to engage and retain students and instructs students, faculty and staff on use of advising technologies

  Conducts assessments to strengthen advisement programs

  Organizes and facilitates training for faculty advisors

  Develops print and online communication materials

  May supervise office operations and budget

  Performs related duties as assigned.

  Salary commensurate with education and experience ($62,411-$72,667).
