Job Summary
The Lead Phlebotomist will perform phlebotomy utilizing a variety of techniques. This position will be responsible for accurately performing specimen collection of inpatients and/or outpatients. Samples collected by the phlebotomist are used for laboratory test procedures that are essential in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. The incumbent will be accountable for the accurate data entry of order and collection information, verification and receipt of specimens, and the processing of reports and result inquiry requests.
Essential Job Functions
Demonstrate high level of skill in HIS functions for patient registrations; collect accurate patient information, review and enter physician orders into the computer, complete patient forms and identifications.
Perform patient demographic inquiries to verify information, assuring the accuracy of patient identification through the use of two identifiers.
Demonstrate knowledge of insurance guidelines; verifies insurance via online eligibility system and update per response.
Complete forms as required and appropriate and use the appropriate registration codes.
Comply with current registration, coding and billing policies.
Utilize the order entry system for resolution of order errors, troubleshooting and placing work orders.
Demonstrates high level of skill in Laboratory Information System (LIS) functions; accurately place orders, look up test codes, collection information, physician demographics, faxIQ, etc.
Monitor various reports to track specimens and/or results.
Monitors HIS-LIS interactions and communications, corrects minor issues, and reports unresolved problems to help desk or appropriate individual.
Complete daily operational tasks and logs pertinent information.
Monitor "orders not processed" to track missing orders/specimens.
Follow standard precautions when performing venous or capillary phlebotomy.
Assure the correct identification of patient and specimen, using two identifiers.
Follow written department protocols for blood collection, including "order of draw", pre- and post-venipuncture care.
Demonstrate minimal redraws and performs in compliance with redraw policy.
Maintain acceptable blood culture contamination rate of <2%.
Assist and perform urine drug screen and legal alcohols collections, following established procedures.
Interact effectively with healthcare providers and patients to obtain and exchange information needed to expedite quality laboratory services.
Assures that telephones are answered with professional etiquette and manages calls to keep hold time and transfers to a minimum.
Remain current with changes in department protocols in order to communicate accurate information.
Fill supply orders and send supplies to floors or off sites as needed.
Progress specimens to sections in an organized manner, recognizing the impact on overall operations.
Maintain and organize a variety of documentation to monitor, record and represent departmental operations.
Copy physician orders as needed and send orders on to be scanned into Onbase.
Scan and index documents for future retrieval.
Access, understand and makes use of the filing system in SPR.
Document receipt of specimens and processes laboratory orders while assessing basic specimen appropriateness.
Access patient orders and specimens according to current policies and procedures.
Adjusts information to enable maximum results reporting efficiency, e.g. documents orders to be faxed, etc.
Keep current on the test menu and specimen requirements.
Comply with established protocols for specimen identification and labeling; follow specimen rejection policies and document appropriately.
Respond promptly and effectively to changes in work volume and processing re-prioritization.
Assure accurate transfer of physician orders and special instructions for processing and reporting.
Compile, sort, mail and process results in a timely, accurate manner.
Monitor and take corrective action to investigate delays in pending reports or incomplete physician information.
Maintain physician database to reflect changes in demographics.
Process faxes and results to expedite results reporting, assuring professional appearance and quality of the report.
Maintain operational readiness of the work area to assure continuity of service between and among staff.
Maintain adequate supply inventory.
Maintain temperature charts, sharps containers, etc. at off sites, and initiate corrective action to variances.
Organize, prioritize and send out testing performed in Excela laboratories or in approved reference laboratories.
Organize samples for send out testing.
Ready samples for transport, including any and all computer work required, i.e. click and pack, tracking, etc.
Receive reference lab reports and scan reports into the system.
Maintain send out testing supplies and requisitions.
Manage study protocols that are sent to research laboratories.
Assist with assigning lower level staff to cover call offs/shift openings.
Participates in quality management program for support services.
Communicates to IT Help Desk with any database functionality or operational issues.
Operate hospital vehicles in compliance with all regulations, ensuring safe and efficient travel between collection sites.
Lead in the phlebotomy competency and validation of new employees, RN's and technical partners.
Maintain valid PA Driver License.
Other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED or next level of higher education.
Two (2) years of Phlebotomy experience.
Completion of Phlebotomy Training Program or Medical Assistant Training Program.
Completion of full registration training within 90 days of hire.
Knowledge of coding, basic math, and payer/insurance benefits.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and general office related equipment, such as a fax or copier.
Medical terminology and specimen knowledge and laboratory information system experience preferred.
Strong leadership ability, good organizational skills, independent and critical thinking skills, sound judgment, and knowledge of legal aspects and liability of nursing practice.
Strong ability to communicate complex and/or controversial topics and concepts to a wide and diverse audience.

Valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License (if out of state hire current Department of Motor Vehicle record report required and obtain PA Current Driver License within 30 days of hire).
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities, but does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
Incumbent will be scheduled based on operational need (rotate shifts, standby, on-call, etc.).
Travel may be expected locally between Excela Health locations.
