Job Description
GraalVM is a runtime environment capable of running multiple programming languages in the same process, and easy implementation of new programming languages. Currently, GraalVM can run programs written in Java, Scala, JavaScript, Ruby, Python, LLVM bitcode and WebAssembly. GraalVM relies on the concept of partial evaluation - a mechanism that can compile programs by specializing an interpreter of the programming language ( https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3062341.3062381) - this way, users only need to write a language interpreter, and they get a high-performance implementation for free. GraalVM also allows compiling Java, Scala and Kotlin programs ahead-of-time to native machine code. The advantage of ahead-of-time compilation is improved startup time and reduced memory footprint, because programs do not have to be compiled during run time. This is particularly important for Cloud deployments and microservice architectures, in which applications need to be redeployed and scaled often.
In this role, your task will be to develop new and improve existing compiler optimizations and runtime features in the GraalVM product, to evaluate and tune its performance, to improve its profile-collection and profile-generation capabilities, with the aim of making GraalVM the most competitive VM for running applications written in Java and other programming languages that it supports.
Responsibilities
As a member of the GraalVM development team, you will:
Improve the existing optimizations, and devise new optimizations to improve the performance of the GraalVM product, either in terms of compilation speed, memory footprint or performance of the generated code.
Implement new and improve existing just-in-time and ahead-of-time compilation techniques.
Analyze and tune various compiler optimizations, and virtual-machine components.
Improve profile-collection and profile-generation features of GraalVM, used to assist compiler optimizations.
Maintain and improve the development and performance-tracking infrastructure.
