New Jersey's academic health center, Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS) takes an integrated approach to educating students, providing clinical care, and conducting research, all with the goal of improving human health. Posting Summary
Rutgers School of Dental Medicine (RSDM) - Department of Oral Biology is seeking a Research Associate I. As a Research Associate specializing in Microbiome research, the incumbent will play a key role in designing, conducting, and analyzing sequenced data to enhance our understanding of microbial communities in diverse environments. This Research Associate will collaborate with cross-functional teams to contribute to the development of innovative projects, with the ultimate goal of advancing scientific knowledge and support publishing research findings in reviewed scientific journals. The ideal candidate must be extremely self-motivated, organized and detail-oriented but also to synergistically interact with other lab members.Essential duties and responsibilities include the following:
  • Develops and executes research plans to investigate the composition and function of microbiome data from various biological samples.
  • Partakes in guiding robust methods for sample collection, DNA extraction, and processing to ensure high-quality data.
  • Utilizes state-of-the-art sequencing technologies to analyze microbial DNA and RNA and apply bioinformatics tools to process, analyze, and interpret large-scale microbiome datasets.
  • Formulates testable hypotheses related to the role of microbiota in health, disease, or specific
    environmental conditions.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams, including bioinformaticians, data scientists, and clinical researchers, to integrate microbiome data into broader research initiatives.
  • Prepares research findings for publication in peer-reviewed journals and presents results at conferences and communicates complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences, including internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Stays abreast of emerging technologies and methodologies in microbiome research; evaluates and implement new techniques to enhance experimental capabilities.
  • Contributes to grant writing efforts by providing scientific rationale, methodology, and expected outcomes for microbiome-related research proposals.
  • Responsible for procurement of supplies and resources for the research group.
  • Actively seeks new collaborative projects within the department and externally.
  • Supervises the undergraduate or master's students.
  • Understands and adheres to Rutgers' compliance standards as they appear in RBHS's Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  Qualifications

  

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Ph.D. in Bioinformatics Microbiology, Epidemiology (or related field) plus two (2) years of related research experience.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Expertise in next-generation sequencing technologies and bioinformatics analysis of microbiome data, gene expression.
  • Strong statistical analysis skills for interpreting complex datasets.
  • Experience with microbial culturing and isolation techniques.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with multi-omics integration (metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, metabolomics).
  • Medical or Dental degree preferred.

  • Should be able to travel internationally to assist in sample collection and study coordination.
