This is an exciting opportunity for an individual who is passionate about advancing knowledge in the area of translational research of depressive disorders and other mental health conditions with a focus on invasive and non-invasive brain stimulation treatments. The position is available June 1, 2023, and funding is available for at least two years. The primary project focuses on analysis of neuroimaging and electrophysiology data collected from research participants with treatment resistant depression prior to implantation with prefrontal cortical stimulation paddles and generators. This includes rsfMRI, intracranial recordings between surgical procedures, and baseline and monthly follow up EEGs during tasks and under different stimulation parameters. We work with a dynamic and collaborative research team at the University of Minnesota, and a successful candidate will work at the forefront of understanding the neurobiology of mood disorders and will use this knowledge to inform personalized interventions. To meet this challenge, the candidate will receive supervision and mentoring from multiple team members across several departments. These include Dr. Theoden Netoff, Professor of Biomedical Engineering and the Director of the Center for Neuroengineering, Dr. Damien Fair, Director of the Masonic Institute for the Developing Brain, and Dr. Oscar Miranda-Dominguez, Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics. Job Responsibilities/Duties: Conduct in-depth research into the neurobiology of mood disorders, with a focus on understanding the underlying mechanisms and potential targets for neuromodulation - 10% Computational modeling of behavior and electrophysiology - 30% Analyze and interpret data collected using invasive (deep electrodes) and non-invasive (functional MRI) techniques, including computer programming, analysis methods, and visualization - 25% Contribute to the publication of research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present research at conferences - 10% Provide mentorship and guidance to graduate and undergraduate students as needed -10% Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of researchers, clinicians, and engineers to design and implement personalized neuromodulation interventions - 5% Professional Development - 5% Maintaining regulatory requirements and trainings - 5% This position includes transportation of buliy or heavy objects on carts. Also requires standing or sitting for extended periods. Qualifications Required Qualifications: PhD in relevant field (neuroscience, psychology, cognitive science, biomedical engineering, or a related discipline) Strong background in at least two of the following disciplines: electrophysiology, neuroimaging, mathematical modeling, or signal processing. Proficiency in using relevant software and tools for data analysis, such as MATLAB, Python, C, or similar. Familiarity with using large computing clusters Familiarity with git and version control Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with specific documentation of those skills through published work and oral scientific presentations Demonstrated ability to work independently and to independently overcome complex technical challenges Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research team A strong passion for translational research in the field of mental health, with a focus on brain stimulation treatment Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience with psychiatric patient populations, the biological mechanisms of mental illness, and/or medical device development Previous experience with human functional imaging or electrophysiology About the Department Dr. Ziad Nahas's Lab is located primarily at the Interventional Psychiatry Program's St. Louis Park, MN clinic, with additional study activity at UMN and M Health Fairview sites on the UMN campus. Our work focuses on advancing translational research of mood dysregulation and depressive disorders. Specific interests and areas of expertise include: * Improving patient care of treatment resistant disorders using neuromodulation techniques. * Functional neuroimaging (fMRI), electroencephalography (EEG) and brain stimulation modalities: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS), vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), prefrontal cortical stimulation (PCS), deep brain stimulation (DBS), electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and focal electrically administered seizure therapy (FEAST). * Increasing equitable access to neuromodulation interventions for patient care.
