2023-2024 Middle School Environmental & Sustainability Teacher (LIC)
Mission Statement: The Growing Up Green Charter School (GUGCS) supports children to be conscious, contributing members of their community through a rigorous, anti-racist, anti-bias, curriculum and an engaging green culture. Graduates of GUGCS will be prepared to attend high-performing schools where their interdisciplinary academic foundation, knowledge of sustainability, and strong sense of self sets them apart as leaders and social justice advocates of the future.
Responsibilities:
Implement GUGCS curricular programsTeach sections of a sustainability class to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders that focuse on environmental awareness, green living practices, climate change, healthy eating, local/national/international activism, and more.Plan and organize field trips and outdoor learning experiences associated with sustainability topics Collaborate with grade team to integrate curriculum across subject areasUse the Responsive Classroom/Developmental Designs model for community-building and behavior management strategiesDifferentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learnersAdhere to subject-specific grade-wide pacing calendarsMaintain organized records of anecdotal notes and assessmentsAdminister formal interim assessments and informal ongoing assessments, conferencing, end-of-unit rubrics, student portfolios, etc.Use data collected on assessments to modify unit plans, inform groupings, and to support student referralsParticipate in grade team and curricular planning meetingsCreate and maintain an engaging and organized physical classroom environment, making learning accessible to all studentsEstablish and maintain ongoing positive relationships with familiesActively participate in the school community through weekly staff meetings, PD opportunities, staff committees, school events, etc.Work with an instructional coach on specific goals throughout the yearRespond productively to ongoing, year-round professional feedbackWork closely with the Special Education department (learning specialists, interventionists, service providers) to best support student learningUse weekly lesson plans to help drive instruction in a clear mannerCreate units of study using Understanding by Design (UBD) practicesLead a daily advisory group and demonstrate commitment to working with diverse populations of families and students, including those at-risk
Minimum Qualifications:
Strong commitment to Growing Up Green Charter School's mission and green themeBackground and/or high level of knowledge in sustainability or environmental awarenessDemonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a team of teachersKnowledge of Responsive Classroom and/or Developmental DesignsExperience in environmental education and/or science teaching a plusExperience with technology integrationExcellent organizational skillsStarting salary is $61,070. Salaries are determined using an equitable compensation scale that accounts for years of experience as lead teacher in a K-12 setting and levels of attained education
Education:
Bachelor's degree required, Master's preferredAt least two years of classroom teaching experience in the middle school grades
Required Certificates & Licenses: NY Teaching certification, NYC DOE/Fingerprinting & Background Clearance
