  Overview:

  Do you have four (4) or more years of construction, trades and/or field maintenance experience? Do you have a Class B Driver's license? Do you enjoy working outside as part of a team? If so, check out this opportunity! There are 3 positions available.

  The first position is Valley Water's Maintenance Workers II who work as part of a crew, performing maintenance and construction projects Valley Water-wide at water distribution facilities and along creeks, ponds, and reservoirs for flood control. Maintenance staff are responsible for performing a wide range of maintenance and construction tasks. Adaptability and flexibility regarding work assignments and the ability to get along well with a team is critical to success in this role. Maintenance Worker II regularly use a variety of construction tools.

  The second and third position is a Valley Water's Maintenance Workers II apart of the Good Neighbor Program. The Good Neighbor Program was created as Valley Water embarks on a collaborative countywide effort working toward creating a functional zero unhoused population in Santa Clara County. The Good Neighbor Program will be responsible for cleaning up trash, debris, and hazardous pollutants generated by encampments near waterways or on Valley Water property. Cleanups may be performed by hand or utilizing heavy and light equipment. These are additional duties for the traditional Maintenance Worker II role, and they will receive additional compensation of a 5% differential.

  These positions work outside and can sometimes be subjected to difficult environmental conditions such as cold, heat or rain. There could be times when this position is called out at night to perform flood control during emergencies. If you are up to this challenge, apply now!

  Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  Construct, maintain, and repair flood control, groundwater recharge facilities, and dams; patch cracks; build and remove small dams and lay riprap; perform concrete work; break and remove rubble, place forms, and install reinforcements; mix, pour, and finish cement.

  Support the loading of sediment and the cleaning of creeks, groundwater recharge and sludge ponds; Count truck loads; complete truck tags; and makes sure operators are properly loading trucks and perform traffic control.

  Construct, repair, and maintain dams, channels, roads, and other water distribution and flood control properties.

  Operate pumps, generators, and small equipment. Assist in performing preventive maintenance on pumps, valves, and other water distribution facilities; assist District staff in various mechanical, electrical, carpentry, and painting work.

  Perform traffic control functions; set up traffic warning devices and barricades; direct traffic around work sites.

  Haul equipment to and from job sites; inspect equipment, make operating adjustments, and perform minor preventive maintenance and repair.

  Maintain paper and electronic records of work performed.

  Construct and repair fences.

  Setting up traffic control and directing traffic around work sites

  Check job site for potential hazards; determine precautions for equipment operation; operate power tools and light equipment and perform assignment in compliance with safety regulations.

  Installing hoses, generators, and pumps for water diversions, work with biologists on fish rescue operations, install geotextile fabric for erosion control projects, use survey equipment for grade checking, set up construction signs along trails and roadways, flagging, directing truckers on sediment and erosion control projects, install BMP's.

  Supervise contracted labor staff, flaggers, and equipment operators, fill out truck tags and labor sheets, assist light and heavy equipment operators transporting, loading, and unloading equipment.

  Chain saw work removing trees and debris along creeks, rivers, and along access roads for flood control, trash rack and pier nose clearing for flood control, crane rigging for debris removal, emergency sandbag installation, canal tending for Water Utility

  Remove blockages and sediment and perform erosion repair in creeks; estimate and document volume of obstructions that caused blockages.

  In addition to the Maintenance Worker II duties listed above, the Maintenance Worker II on the Good Neighbor Program will have the following additional duties. Maintenance Worker II on the Good Neighbor Program will receive a 5% differential:

  Assist in trash and debris removal in and around unhoused encampment at various location county wide; ensure proper disposal of hazardous materials as established by Valley Water guidelines.

  Drive, maintain, and operate a variety of vehicles including garbage trash compactors.

  Work with contract labor crews and provide oversite.

  Remove blockages and instream trash rafts; estimate and document volume of obstructions.

  Ideal Candidate's Background Includes:

  Applicants whose experience and background best match the ideal experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and education are considered ideal candidates for the position. To determine the top candidates, each applicant will be assessed based on the ideal candidate criteria as listed below.

  Ideal Experience:

  4+ years of field construction experience in the trades such as general construction (commercial or residential).Ideal Skills and Abilities:

  Learn operational characteristics and limitations of light construction equipment.

  Learn pertinent laws and regulations including state and local Department of Transportation codes relating to the operation and transport of light construction equipment.

  Read and interpret maps, engineer drawings, and specifications.

  Perform traffic control functions.

  Perform maintenance of hand and power equipment and tools.

  Ideal Knowledge:

  Practices, procedures, methods, tools, and equipment used in the construction, maintenance and repair of water distribution and flood control facilities.

  Operational characteristics of construction equipment and materials.

  Methods and techniques of concrete finishing.

  Operational characteristics of maintenance, hand and power equipment and tools.

  Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.

  Ideal Training and Education:

  Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

  Must have a satisfactory driving record and possess a minimum of a valid California Class B driver's license with air brake endorsement.

  Required License or Certificate

  Must have a satisfactory driving record and a valid California Class B driver’s license with tanker and air brake endorsements at the time of hire.

  Special Requirement:

  Watersheds Field Operations Unit (Position Code 181, 586, 1090)

  Valley Water Telework Program: Eligibility for telework will depend on the type of work performed, operational needs, and the ability for the employee to perform the essential functions of their job duties while teleworking. Employment with Valley Water requires employees to live within 150 miles of their primary physical work location located in San Jose, California by their start date.

  This position requires the individual to be onsite and is typically not a teleworking position.
