MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: This is an internship through the UAlbany School of Public Health, so candidates must be enrolled graduate student at SPH and apply via the internship program
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: We are interested in Epidemiology students who have basic SAS skills. Required coursework includes EPI 501, EPI 502, EPI 514, EPI 552, and EPI 553. Recommended coursework includes EPI 609.
RESPONSIBILITIES The intern will assist with two main tasks as part of the Birth Defects Research Section at NYSDOH:
(1) Assist with a descriptive epidemiology project related to a specific birth defect: The student will be working with data that has already been collected and will use SAS to clean and analyze the data. Specific tasks will include developing SAS codes to clean the data and create an analysis set, modifying SAS code to describe co-occurrence of other birth defects, calculating prevalence estimates overall and among categories of certain variables, describing cases by available demographic variables, and creating tables and figures to summarize results. In addition to the analytic work, the intern will help place their findings in context of the existing literature.
(2) Conduct systematic literature reviews on birth defects topics proposed by NBDPS/BD-STEPS researchers:
Through systematic reviews, the intern will learn many of the necessary skills for an epidemiologist, including how to identify existing sources of data, how to synthesize published studies, how to describe a public health problem, how to explain the importance of epidemiologic research, how to apply basic epidemiologic terminology and definitions, how to communication epidemiologic information, how to draw conclusions from epidemiologic data, and how to evaluate the strengths and limitations of epidemiologic reports.
DETAILS OF EMPLOYMENT
Part-time position: 20 hours/week for total of 12 weeks over the course of the summer.

Hourly intern, grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.
Qualified candidates must be either an MPH or an MS Epidemiology student at SUNY Albany’s School of Public Health; AND must have completed at least 24 credits of coursework toward their degree including at least four of the core courses; AND must have maintained a GPA of 3.0 or better AND are unable to participate in an internship if on academic probation.
Valid and unrestricted authorization to work in the U.S. is required. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
This position requires that the incumbent will report to the official work location and live within commuting distance to the official work location. Telecommuting may not be available. If telecommuting is available, the incumbent will be required to have a telephone/mobile device, and internet access.
