Residency Requirement: Must reside in Florida.
Level of Education Prefer a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a life or physical science. Master’s degree with three or more years supervisory experience, social science/project management and volunteer management experience preferred.
Description of Duties:
The Volunteer Program Manager (VPM) cultivates volunteer involvement through stewardship activities, participatory science programs, and partnership development, directing volunteer-based conservation initiatives for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. This is a managerial position encompassing planning, development and coordination of volunteer activities for the Public Access Services Office and across all FWC divisions and offices.
In this role, the VPM supervises six regional volunteer program biologists, providing guidance and support to ensure agency priorities are met through effective volunteer program implementation. The VPM enables FWC staff to increase success with volunteers. The VPM also provides leadership on volunteer issues for the agency, including co-managing an agency-wide team to support volunteerism.
This is an exciting opportunity for an outgoing, self-motivated individual with a commitment to conservation. The successful candidate will have excellent organizational, leadership, community development, project design, management and communication skills; and will demonstrate dedication to the FWC’s mission of conserving Florida’s fish, wildlife and habitats. Broad-based working knowledge of local ecology and a variety of Florida’s non-game species across multiple taxa is preferred.
This managerial position oversees volunteer and intern initiatives aligned with agency strategic priorities, with duties and responsibilities including:
Agency Volunteer Administration and Coordination:
Serve as a resource for volunteers and volunteer managers.
Foster statewide volunteer projects with Divisions and Offices that align with agency needs and priorities.
Expand the use of volunteers, including participatory science volunteers.
Assist with developing and guiding volunteer policy and procedures.
Assist with developing and guiding training for volunteers and volunteer managers.
Assist with development and maintenance of the Volunteer and Event Management System.
Provide evaluation and assessment of the agency’s volunteer programs.
Co-lead the Volunteer Standing Team and participate in other internal teams as directed.
Assist with emergency recruitment and coordination of volunteers in a natural or species related disaster.
Secure funding for volunteer resources through grant writing and grant management as well as fund raising initiatives.
Coordinate annual volunteer and volunteer manager recognition events.
Supervision and Management:
Supervise the Regional and Ridge Ranger Volunteer Program Biologists to ensure regional and the Lake Wales Ridge priorities are being met using volunteers and interns.
Supervise volunteers and interns as needed.
Communications and Partnerships:
Communicate conservation successes achieved through volunteerism via media including newsletters and social media.
Maintain the Volunteer SharePoint portal and the Get Involved Section of the agency’s website.
Write and distribute volunteer activity reports for presentations, legislators and give reports and project activity updates.
Participate in volunteer organizations such as Volunteer Florida, Association for Advancing Participatory Sciences and the Florida Association for Volunteer Resource Management.
Foster relationships through volunteerism with community and conservation support organizations.
