ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Nurses may have duties in the following areas:
Insurance Verification
· Investigates/obtains insurance information for bariatric surgical patients and obtains and documents prior-approvals according to specific reimbursement guidelines.
· Obtains hospital precertification based on insurance procedures.
· Ensures patients meet basic National Institute Health criteria for bariatric surgery
· Coordinates diet and exercise counseling requirements based on patients individual insurance criteria
· Collaborates with surgeon and multidisciplinary team to identify areas of concern, or potential complications and coordinate clearance as directed.
· Meets with patients to review benefits and pre surgical prior authorization requirements
· Submits collected data to insurance companies for prior authorization once criteria have been met for insurance and program.
· Counsels patients if insurance submission has been denied
· Forwards prior authorizations/pre-certifications to the insurance verification team.
· Demonstrates sensitivity to patient while working through program.
· Participates in office coordination as needed by responding to patients phone requests.
· Demonstrates an awareness of self-responsibility and accountability of own professional practice and development. Serves as mentor and clinical resource.
· Encourages patients and their families to obtain and complete the documentation necessary for establishing eligibility.
· Demonstrates ability to communicate effectively and express ideas clearly, actively listens and always follows appropriate channels of communication.
· Develops and maintains working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, patients and families.
· Monitors documentation to assure that services are being utilized/provided appropriately.
· Demonstrates initiative in problem solving and critical thinking.
· Attends and participates in department and interdisciplinary team meetings as scheduled. Participates on committees as appropriate. Participates in relevant hospital and community in-service training programs as requested.
· Serves as a resource to other staff and external customers in areas of specialized expertise.
· Notifies patients of policy exclusions, program discharges and alternative options.
Clinic Office Nurse
· Demonstrates ability to recognize and assess urgent/emergency needs of patients and initiate appropriate emergency procedures as needed.
· Demonstrates current level of knowledge of various payor regulations by functioning within those guidelines.
· Follows procedure/protocols for the organization and management of the electronic medical record (i.e. test results, retrieval, filing, creation, repair, charging of electronic medical record).
· Acts to facilitate interdisciplinary communication. Utilizes other members of the health care team in assessing the patient and analyzes patient data. Assesses learning needs of the patient and significant others. Gives accurate and complete information to patient and family.
· Evaluates patient and family understanding of treatment plan and/or instructions.
· Assists with/performs a variety of procedures, exams and/or operation of diagnostic equipment as assigned (i.e., patient weight/body composition, gastric band adjustment, EKG, drain removal, dressing change, etc.).
· Maintains appropriate aseptic technique for preparation, procedures and medications administered.
· Accurately and legibly documents all patient interactions in patient medical record.
· Manages missed patient appointments and follow-up per program requirements.
· Reports results and pertinent information to patients and health care team members.
· Coordinates patient lab/testing processes (ordering, scheduling, timely results notification and follow-up).
· Applies professional nursing skills in the provision of preventive health maintenance and treatment of ill and injured patients utilizing the four aspects of the nursing process: assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation.
· Provides bedside post-operative education/instruction for in-house bariatric surgery patients.
· Provides bariatric surgery education on pre and post-operative progression of diet, exercise and recovery.
· Complies with regulatory requirements and Center of Excellence criteria.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
· Work includes cross coverage in other clinic areas as team needs.
· Maintains supply inventory and stocks supplies in various work areas.
· Responsible for following equipment maintenance protocol, identifying problems, and coordinating appropriate repairs.
· Operates various office machines (i.e. fax, copier, phone and computer).
· Misc. office duties (i.e. copying, filing, retrieval of electronic records)
· Functions as a charge/resource nurse as requested
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
· Possession of a current RN license issued by the State of Iowa. BSN preferred.
· Minimum of three years hospital experience (critical care preferred).
· Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider certified or obtained within three (3) months of hire.
· Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population serve within three (3) months of hire
