Position Description:
Reporting to the Vice President, Academic (VPA), the Associate Vice President (AVP), Teaching and Learning will play a leadership role in achieving the vision of teaching and learning innovation and excellence at George Brown College. The AVP will foster support and develop a culture of excellence in teaching and learning, ongoing experimentation, reflection, development, and collaboration, and will advance the College's teaching and learning initiatives and priorities, as articulated in the Strategic and Academic Plans.
Key responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership
Leads the development of an institutional Teaching and Learning plan that sets out the vision to establish GBC as a preeminent teaching and learning institution.
Provides leadership for the provision of academic support services for faculty. Identifies priorities for supporting, sustaining, and innovating evidenced-based teaching and learning environments to achieve an exemplary student learning experience and distinctive excellence in teaching and learning in signature areas (e.g., BSI, GTRCMC, UDL, SoTL, etc.).
Establishes and implements policies, standards, systems, and practices that result in an organizational culture of creativity, innovation, quality and collaboration within the Teaching and Learning Community (college-wide and more broadly).
Ensures that teaching and learning activities are carried out in a manner that achieves the objectives established in Vision 2030, Strategy 2026, and the Academic Plan 2027.
Works directly with the Deans on the development of departmental teaching and learning plans and the creation of Professional Development Impact Reports.
Teaching Excellence
In collaboration with faculty, develops Professional Teaching Standards for Excellence in Teaching including a focus on UDL and equity-minded practices. Embed processes to support, develop and celebrate faculty achievement of these standards.
In alignment and support of the institutional Professional Teaching Standards, leads the development and implementation of Professional Teaching Certifications that are recognized nationally and internationally.
Evaluates the effectiveness of teaching practices across programs departmentally and institutionally.
Plans and executes, with the TLX team, the New Faculty Academy to support probationary faculty through their learning requirements; ongoing enhancement to the program through engagement with Associate Deans and feedback from new faculty participants.
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
Provide leadership and guidance in the implementation of a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning framework, including support for faculty to actively participate in research and scholarship related to teaching and learning practices, and active dissemination and integration of evidence-informed practices.
Oversees and reports on metrics related to faculty scholarly activity.
Provides support for the launch, promotion, and ongoing operations of George Brown College's Academic Journal.
Talent Development & Management
Provides leadership to direct reports and extended TLX team through hiring, coaching, and modelling key behaviors/strategies.
Defines shared and individual goals to meet target dates and ensure alignment of goals.
Leads project teams in virtual environments including partners that are geographically distributed.
Community Building
In partnership with Indigenous Initiatives and the Indigenous community, develops learning and professional development opportunities for authentic integration and advancement of Indigenous Pedagogy.
Represents George Brown College on special initiatives as directed by the VPA. Acts as a representative on various academic and administration committees.
Leads project teams including partners that are geographically distributed.
Other duties as assigned.
Educational and Experience Requirements:
Earned PhD or EdD in a relevant field.
Proven track record of scholarly activity including publications.
A minimum of 13 years of experience with a combination of teaching experience and progressively responsible leadership experience in the post-secondary setting.
Direct managerial experience of teams and a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with faculty.
Experience leading faculty development initiatives preferred.
Prior experience in a unionized environment preferred.
Skills and Attributes:
Proficiency with learning management systems and current online teaching tools.
Broad leadership skills managing a diverse team of experienced individuals.
Cross-collaboration and stellar working relationship with other stakeholders across the College.
Maintain currency and active participation in professional development, education seminars, training programs, etc.
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the scholarship of teaching and learning.
Demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging trends that impact the teaching and learning environment.
Possesses the ability to conceptualize the nature and development of teaching and learning services at a teaching-intensive institution.
Excellent communication, collaboration, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated commitment to uphold the College's priorities on diversity and equity.
