Summary
The Associate Dean for Global Affairs and the Director of the WHO Collaborating Center provides leadership for the University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN) activities related to global education and practice, as well as global community relations and engagement. The Associate Dean will focus on leading the vision for global engagement and clinical innovation supporting faculty in clinical program development through ascertaining external support and business plan development for sustainability. The Associate Dean will develop new institutional/agency partnerships for faculty and student global engagement and experiences. The Associate Dean will oversee our continued successful partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Center.
The Associate Dean will serve as the School of Nursing's representative and contact for all global engagement education programs for university and external agencies including accreditation and certification agencies. The global engagement programs include all APRN specialties, the BS-DNP, and the post-master's DNP programs. The Associate Dean, in collaboration with the Associate Dean for Professional Graduate Programs and the Associate Dean for Research and Rackham Graduate Studies, assures that, at least annually, faculty review the vision, objectives and outcomes of doctoral education in the School including the DNP and PhD programs. The Associate Dean for Global Affairs does not oversee graduate program implementation.
The Associate Dean will be responsible for facilitating engagements with external constituents, and have a commitment to local and global partnerships in the areas of teaching, practice and research. Lead student outreach programs; oversee our continued successful partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Center; interface with the University's Global Health initiative.
Responsibilities*
The Associate Dean for Global Affairs and Director of the WHO Collaborating Center in the School of Nursing is directly accountable for leadership to achieve the following:
Lead the School of Nursing in re-igniting' the global affairs agenda of the school with particular attention to facilitating the generation of innovative ideas, the formation of meaningful research teams to tackle new global opportunities, and assisting department chairs to develop productivehabits of scientists' in the faculty.
Develop a strategy, implementation plan and timeline in collaboration with the department chairs for implementing global affairs development plans for faculty and teams; development activities could include things such as workshops and seminars.
Identify a faculty advisory group that represents global sectors in the school who can provide meaningful input into global development plans, policies and other issues.
Work directly with the department chairs and other associate deans through regular and planned methods to collectively identify new global opportunities for the school and faculty, including new internal/external collaborations to broaden and strengthen our global portfolio.
Support the associate deans/department chairs in enacting their responsibility to oversee global management by assuring that associate deans/department chairs have adequate information, reports and timelines of the department faculty regarding management through collaboration with the Office of Global Affairs.
Provide oversight of Global Affairs:
Provide direct support to the faculty and staff in the Office for Global Outreach through regular contact and availability to review all projects and timelines to assure faculty/department chairs are adequately engaged in the project's development;
Review and approve/deny all requests for School of Nursing outreach activities following established and/or create policies and guidelines;
Collaborate with associate deans and department chairs on projects going forward properly support School of Nursing activities.
Assist department chairs in the oversight of global management of their faculty by assuring that they have access to and utilize global activity and meetings for pro-active problem solving.
Leads and evaluates the undergraduate program for a minor in global health and global concentration for graduate students, including international student placements in collaboration with faculty, leadership track of the DNP program.
Oversees the international visiting scholar program.
7.) Maintain good working relationships with university departments, officers, and administrators that oversee global activity in the university; serve as the School of Nursing representative to university level global related meetings.
8.) Assure that the Dean is informed of ongoing and/or emerging issues related to global activity in the school.
Required Qualifications*
The successful candidate will hold a doctoral degree.
The candidate must have a sustained and unequivocal record of excellence in leadership, practice, research/scholarship, and teaching.
Demonstrated excellence in communication, networking and relationship building skills at all levels of the organization and with external constituents.
Other preferred qualifications include a commitment to diversity, an ability to mentor faculty at all levels, collaboration with other health disciplines, experience with community and health care organizational partners, and significant understanding of health care delivery business practices and professional regulatory environment.
