  Position Summary:Are you a multimedia journalist who yearns for adventure and an environment packed with fascinating stories? Do you find fulfillment in sharing your experience with others? The University of Alaska Fairbanks Department of Journalism: Science and the Environment invites applications for one tenure-track position (nine-month appointment) at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor of Journalism, beginning in the 2024-2025 academic year.

  Located in Alaska’s second-largest city (pop.: 33,500; borough pop.: 97,5000), UAF is the University of Alaska’s flagship campus and boasts more than 7,000 graduate and undergraduate students, world-class research and a wildly popular NCAA Division 1 hockey team. It is home to the UA Museum of the North, which holds the world’s largest collection of Arctic dinosaurs, and the Poker Flat Research Range, the world’s largest land-based rocket research range. In 2021, Times Higher Education ranked UAF as one of the 25 best small universities in the world.

  The responsibilities of this position support the University of Alaska Fairbanks’s tripartite mission of teaching, research creative activity, and service. The successful applicant will be qualified to teach audio production, video production, and multimedia website construction as well as basic journalism skills and survey courses.

  We are especially interested in applicants with complementary areas of expertise (ex: news and features, short-form and long-form) and those with a specialization in science, technology, or the environment –though all qualified applicants will be considered.

  To thrive in this position, the candidate should have at least ten years of experience in journalism, preferably in multimedia, preferably in the field(s) of science, and/or environment. The successful applicant will have at least seven years of experience in reporting, writing, and editing for multiple media platforms. Experience in broadcast journalism preferred.

  Furthermore, they must demonstrate evidence of at least 5 years of teaching excellence at the post-secondary level in both face-to-face and online modalities, engagement in service (to their field, university, and community), and an active agenda for research/creative activity. Applicants should have strong interpersonal and communication skills to work in an environment involving a variety of cultures, backgrounds, and age levels. Experience with teaching diverse student populations is highly desirable (including first-year students, dual-enrollees, underrepresented or rural student populations, first-generation college students, veterans, and students experiencing disabilities).

  Preference will be given to applicants with output related to science and/or the environment. Must have an excellent record in all aspects of multimedia journalism. Must be proficient in both digital video and audio production. Experience with Adobe Suite is highly preferred.

  Minimum Qualifications:

  A minimum of a Master’s Degree in Journalism or a related field of study is required at the time of appointment.
