The Assistant Director for Fitness at the University of Albany is responsible for the administration and oversight of a comprehensive program of fitness activity and wellness programming for the university community. They have the autonomy to analyze and resolve problems and determine appropriate action within their area of expertise, as well as supervise numerous undergraduate and graduate student assistants. The Assistant Director for Fitness provides recommendations for the development of program budget, oversees the implementation and monitoring of budget, inventory, and other resources, and makes recommendations for policy changes.
Primary Responsibilities:
Manage all Fitness Center operations, including satellite fitness centers and all other additional fitness spaces.
Manage and supervise student staff for fitness center areas, including hiring, training, scheduling, evaluating, and payroll.
Oversee the creation, presentation, and implementation of the staffing budget for all fitness areas.
Develop and oversee the department's personal training & small group training programs, which are based on a comprehensive knowledge of national data, trends, and best practices that meet the needs of our community.
Recruit, hire, train, schedule, and actively mentor all Personal Training and Small Group instructors/trainers.
Develop, implement, and monitor the Personal Training and Small Group Training budgets.
Additional Responsibilities:
Assists in establishing and implementing goals and objectives.
Assists in creating the department's strategic plan.
Interacts with the Director and staff members regarding topics to help identify opportunities for improvement.
Work with all Campus Recreation Programming professional staff members to actively communicate and market all programs through print media, electronic media, social media, special events and ,any other efforts deemed appropriate to reach the University Community effectively.
Maintains a positive relationship with other personnel and departments that assist in the development of Campus Recreation programs, services, and facilities.
Represents the Department of Campus Recreation and The University at Albany on various committees, boards, and associations.
Interacts with students, faculty, and staff for the benefit of carrying out the mission of the department.
Reporting Relationships:
One or two Graduate Assistants assigned to Fitness.
30 Student Staff assigned to Fitness.
15 Student Staff assigned to Managers on Duty.
6 Student Personal Trainers/Small Group Trainers.
Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Sports Administration, Recreation, Athletic/Recreation Administration, Physical Education, Exercise Science, Public Health, Sports Management, or a related field.
Two or more years of relevant experience in fitness, personal training, recreation, or other related fields.
Demonstrated experience supervising staff.
Ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Applicants must address their ability to obtain a Personal Training or Strength and Conditioning certification within the first year of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree from an accredited institution in Higher Education Administration, Recreation, Sports Administration, Public Health, Exercise Science, and/or related field.
Experience creating or overseeing a budget for assigned area.
Holds a current Personal Training, Strength and Conditioning, or similar certification
