Department Summary:
MITRE’s NC3 Futures Department, N132, is seeking a Group Leader to lead the Applied Nuclear Systems Engineering Group. The successful candidate will supervise, lead, and provide quality oversight of work. In addition, the candidate will be focused on staff development, technical expertise, delivery of high-quality technical products, and assist and grow the group’s capability. The selected candidate will help evolve N132 Department and N130 Division outcomes, by actively working as part of the leadership team, to support and craft the organization’s strategic direction, identify new opportunities and initiatives, and lead related activities. Candidates should have a track record of leading people, thinking, and acting innovatively, and collaborating across boundaries. The Group Leader position is critical to staff and department/division outcomes.
The Applied Nuclear Systems Engineering Group consists of experts in NC3 as well as other domain systems engineering. This group applies systems engineering principles, concepts, and methods to the planning, design, improvement, and operation of the enterprise. This group also completes requirements analyses, performs system of systems qualitative analyses, and has operational experience that can be applied to the Nuclear and other domain engineering. Staff in this group work within N130 and across other department/divisions across MITRE.

Roles and Responsibilities:
The selected Group Leader will provide direct supervision (DS) for 6-8 assigned staff and interns, providing technical support, conducting regular performance and development conversations, staff advocacy and recognition, and communication with Project/Task Leads on performance. The Group Leader will be critical to the continued development of our department and the development and performance of our talented technical staff. The successful candidate will become an active member of the department leadership team and will have a track record of leading people, developing people, thinking and acting innovatively, and collaborating across boundaries. The individual will serve as the main point of contact for new employee onboarding and as a resource to guide staff in navigating the MITRE organization and processes.
Group leadership responsibilities are part-time and the selected individual should expect to maintain impactful individual contribution in their domain area on direct or indirect MITRE project work. As a direct supervisor, the successful candidate will foster a respectful, inclusive, and collaborative work environment by:
Partnering with Project Leaders to identify appropriate project opportunities where staff can leverage skills they have and continue to develop new skills.

Ensuring that their staff are constantly involved in project work and learning opportunities that align with career aspirations and development plans.

Managing challenging interpersonal dynamics, and performance concerns amongst employees in their Group, their colleagues, and the project leaders they support.
Being the first‐line supervisor and the primary point of contact on human resources matters for the employees in their Group (to include participating in the annual performance and compensation cycles for their employees by assessing performance and recommending salary adjustments and promotions).
Assists Department Leadership team in workforce shaping, work program development, maintaining awareness of emerging technical issues and opportunities.
Basic Qualifications:
Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree in a science, technology, engineering, mathematics; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
Active Top Secret Clearance and ability to acquire TS/SCI clearance
Ability to coach, mentor, and advocate for all levels of staff
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to formulate group-level and department-level goals, and the persistence to execute until those goals are achieved
Desire to develop early career staff and navigate career options/ paths at MITRE
Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the department’s strengths:
Nuclear domain
Systems engineering
Requirements analysis
System of systems analysis
Digital engineering
Modeling, simulation, and analysis
Operational analysis
Networks and communications

Preferred Qualifications:
10 years of related experience, including 2 years of leadership experience.
Active TS/SCI
Track record of mentoring and coaching employees to maximize their potential in the near and long term.
Track record of fostering a culture that empowers innovation, learning, knowledge, sharing, risk-taking, and/or speed.
Demonstrated ability to manage challenging interpersonal dynamics, behavioral issues, and performance concerns when they arise.
Broad familiarity with MITRE initiatives and work programs.
Experience participating in the hiring and onboarding process, such as participation in career fairs, mentorship of interns, supporting the development of requisitions, screening of candidates, participation in interviews, and/or onboarding of new employees.
Understanding and ability to effectively communicate MITRE’s mission and strategy.
Understanding and ability to effectively communicate MITRE Policies and Procedures, HR processes, and administrative procedures (e.g., timecards, absences, transfers, retirement, potential legal issues).
