Position Summary Information
General Summary
TheWelder/Fabricatorperforms highly skilled work in repairing, modifying, and fabricating equipment at water and wastewater plants, pumping stations, pipelines, and depots. Designs, develops, and constructs structural steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and cast-iron assemblies, equipment, and special tools. Creates work orders and documents work computer system. Assists other trade groups with minimal supervision.
Essential Functions
Fabricates a variety of metal equipment and structures from blueprints and own drawings
Welds interior and exterior of field pipelines
Programs and operates CNC equipment using Carveco and Shop Data software
Makes necessary repairs to heavy equipment and trailers
Installs antennas, devices, and safety equipment on elevated tanks
Modifies, repairs, and replaces safety equipment in WSSC Water facilities
Makes modifications and repairs to pumps, valves, pipelines, bar screens, rakes all plant-related equipment where needed
Drives and operates loaders, backhoes, and other related equipment when making repairs and/or modifications
Performs specialized welding on pumps, shafts, gears, and housings of all types of metals
Designs and fabricates tools and repair equipment that are unique to the job or piece of equipment
Handles, stores, and uses bottled gases that are unique to the job
Designs, modifies, and repairs equipment in pumping stations
Operates welding truck and maintains the materials, tools, and equipment on the truck
Uses skill and knowledge of safe rigging practices in moving and installing equipment
Drives a vehicle to conduct WSSC Water business

Work Environment And Physical Demands
Work is performed in a trade shop environment.
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Comprehensive knowledge of welding shop and field layout techniques and methods
Extensive skill in the use of SMAW , TIG , MIG , and Oxy- Acetylene cutting and welding
Ability to operate and perform maintenance on metal shear, metal punch, metal break, metal band saw, metal wet saw, metal bender, metal rollers, grinders, as well as pipe bender and pipe notcher and other metal-working equipment, adhering to safety procedures
Experience with rigging and operating overhead cranes
Ability to perform all work in a safe and professional manner
Ability to work from blueprints or sketches and ideas verbally conveyed by coworkers pertaining to the requested work
Ability to work with non-trade employees in solving problems when needed and the ability to work independently or with a team on any given assignment
Knowledge and experience in the field of CNC programming and operation
Minimum Education, Experience Requirements
High School diploma or equivalent
4+ years experience as an Industrial Fabricator and Welder
OR
High School diploma or equivalent
6G and/or 4G Welding certificate
2 years of experience as an Industrial Fabricator and Welder
Additional Requirements
Possession of a valid driver’s license with no more than 4 points and the ability to obtain a WSSC Water driver’s permit within 90 days of hire or transfer date and maintain it
Must obtain a current AWS -D1.1 Welder’s Certificate within the Commission’s 1-year probationary period and maintain it
Employees in this position are designated or considered emergency personnel; therefore, the employee must report to work as scheduled or as directed by their supervisor when WSSC Water declares an event that requires emergency personnel to report to work.

Successful completion of a recognized apprenticeship program in metal layout and welding
Salary$23.84 - $40.42 per hour
