  Wastewater Treatment Operator

   

  The purpose of the position is to perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties, which is required to operate, regulate and maintain wastewater treatment plant equipment to assure continued operation of the clients wastewater treatment plant and associated facilities.

   

   

  Responsibilities:

   

  Observes equipment operation for proper functioning and to record readings, including devices for atmospheric gases.

  Operates digesters. Drains supernatant, transfers sludge, drains water traps, checks temperature and adjusts valves.

  Monitor entire treatment process including removal of foreign material, dumping grit buckets, operating degritting equipment and operating mechanical sludge handling equipment.

  Operates effluent odor control equipment, including use of high strength peroxide.

  Collects sewage and sludge samples for analysis.

  Operates and cleans automatic samplers.

  Performs minor/routine equipment repairs and assists maintenance staff as needed.

  Assist with general treatment plant facilities maintenance.

  Cleans work areas, treatment plant and lift stations.

   

   

  Qualifications:

   

  High school diploma or equivalent. Vocational/technical training in wastewater treatment plant operation/equipment preferred.

  One to two years progressively responsible wastewater treatment plant operating experience, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities.

  Demonstrated mechanical aptitude including strong troubleshooting skills.

  Strong math skills including percentages, fractions, division and multiplication.

  Ability to complete confined spaces training and pass respirator clearance exam.

  Demonstrated motivation and ability to work with minimal supervision.

   

   

   

  Physical And Mental Demands:

   

  Ability to operate equipment and machinery requiring complex and rapid adjustments, such as valves, equipment controls, pumps, blowers, sampling equipment, snow removal equipment, common hand tools, gas meter, protective equipment and computer terminal.

  Ability to work in an environment with exposure to strong chemicals, odors, gases, and irritants with proper training and provided PPE.

  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
