Responsibilities
The Seed Processing Assistant is responsible for assisting in the milling of seed, maintenance and operation of the seed processing equipment, coordination with the seed quality laboratory to isolate the best quality seed, delivery of seed to coaters and nurseries meeting grower’s schedules, maintenance of seed storage vaults, maintenance of the seed inventory including monthly reports and seed billing
This position is required to maintain milling records that allow full traceback
This position will report to the Assistant Manager, Seed Operations, and is located in Salinas, CA
Assist with the processing of the highest quality seed from raw seed lots ensuring that grower’s schedules are met in a timely manner
Maintenance of the milling equipment, seed vaults, and milling equipment to process the highest quality seed in a timely manner meeting grower's schedules/needs
Coordination with the seed laboratory to ensure that the highest possible seed quality is generated and the maintenance of processing records in order to be able to perform complete traceback through the processing operation
Will also aid with the processing of plant breeder's research seed including coordination and required quality analysis
Partner with various personnel to develop a new database and barcode system to label and track seed through the processing system, seed storage, and distribution
Provide a monthly inventory update and coordination of monthly seed billing
Collaborate with the quality control laboratory, growers, and seed coaters in order to ensure a constant and uninterrupted supply of premium high-quality seed to meet production schedule requirements
Coordinate closely with the quality control laboratory to provide samples for germination testing, and quality results and utilize those results for making the best quality milling decisions
Responsibility for ensuring that all activities within and equipment are maintained and operated safely for the processing facility and seed vault
Assist the Safety Coordinator with periodic inspections and maintenance of safety records and operation of processing equipment following appropriate SOP's, ensuring that everything is OSHA compliant and readiness is maintained for OSHA inspection
Assist the Assistant Manager of Seed Operations, as needed, with the field production and harvest/milling of seed including supervision of crews, maintenance, and supply of consumables, and transport of materials and seed
Seed harvest is one of several peek times that may require availability for longer work days and/or longer work weeks
Responsible for operating forklift to include safety inspections and maintenance required

Willing to work flexible and long hours during peak season, with weekends required
The ideal candidate is Spanish speaking, has growing experience, and prior experience running and maintaining farm equipment
Physical demands of the essential functions: Capable of working in high or low temperature conditions in the field or greenhouses
Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds
Capable of working long hours during time-critical periods of the research cycle
Potential allergens-pollen, fungal spores, chemical pesticides in field or greenhouse
The employee frequently is required to use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms
Must have a valid driver’s license
