Description
The Department of Public Works is accepting applications for the position of Utility Worker II. Utility Workers perform a variety of manual tasks such as building and grounds maintenance; minor equipment repair; transportation of materials, supplies, or patients; and operation of the laundry services in a locked facility. As part of their duties, Utilities Workers assist skilled trade workers including painters, carpenters, and engineers.
This is a Departmental Promotional Only recruitment and is open only to current employees in the County of San Mateo Department of Public Works.
Examples Of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to:
Operating and maintaining equipment or hand tools used in the maintenance of buildings, grounds, and facilities.
Assembling, maintaining, and repairing equipment and furniture.
Providing complete custodial services to areas such as medical examination rooms, public restrooms, and lobbies.
Utilizing the assistance of and instructing clients or other staff to perform work.
Ordering and receiving supplies, tools, and equipment.
Delivering supplies to appropriate areas.
Digging holes, cleaning-out gutters, or storm drains, and disposing of debris.
Operating a car, van, or light delivery vehicle to transport materials or patients.
Operating and maintaining power tools, hand tools, and specialized equipment
Note: This position will be responsible for assisting Crafts Workers and Stationary Engineers, repairing equipment, and performing preventative maintenance tasks.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:
One year of experience providing building and facility maintenance and minor equipment repair.Licensure/Certification:
Possession of a valid class C California driver license or equivalent
Knowledge of:
Methods, materials, operations, tools, and practices used in moving, loading, arranging, and transporting materials, records, and supplies.
Methods, equipment, and practices used in moving, lifting, and transporting non-ambulatory patients.
Principles and techniques used in basic custodial services, building maintenance, and minor equipment repair.
Fixtures, building hardware, and equipment.
Safety regulations, precautions, and practices.
Methods, practices, and equipment used in the receipt, storage, handling, and ordering of materials and equipment.
Basic arithmetic.
Skill/Ability to:
Follow safety practices.
Follow oral and written instructions.
Communicate effectively and tactfully with customers and others.
Make accurate estimates of time and materials required to perform the job.
Properly use and care for vehicles, tools, and equipment used in the job.
Instruct and direct the work of inmates and others in the performance of job duties.
Lift, carry, push or move materials, supplies, or equipment up to 50 pounds.
Lift and move patients.
Climb ladders.
Walk or stand for long periods of time.

Only current County of San Mateo employees in the Department of Public Works with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, Confidential or Management extra-help/limited term, or SEIU or AFSCME represented extra help/limited term position prior to the final filing date may apply.
Depending on the number of applicants, a screening committee may select those candidates whose education and/or experience appear to best meet the needs of the position based solely on the information provided in the application documents.
