Repairs used tooling and produces parts.
A Day in the Life:
Perform administrative tasks including organizing tools and materials for PM’s and repairs.
Assist tool room technicians following up, as necessary.
Create and maintain a PM (Plant Maintenance) system for all tooling assets.
Conduct FAT (Factory Acceptance Test), IQ (Installation Qualification), OQ (Operational Qualification) and PQ (PROCESS QUALIFICATION) qualifications for molds and/or equipment. Document results with detailed technical reports.
Provides technical assistance and expertise to manufacturing in problematic situations, implementing corrective action and provide training as the need arises.
Establish and maintain manufacturing specifications, i.e., BOM (Bill of Material), routings, set up sheets and other related technical recommendations and documentation.
Work with and lead projects with Set-up Technicians.
Work with Process, Quality and Manufacturing Departments to debug and validate molds maintaining optimized process.
Identify and implement Continuous Improvement projects and/or general improvement projects. Maintain Open Issues matrix.
Machine needed parts from blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals specifications, sample parts, or by receiving verbal instruction to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work, sequence of operation and setup requirements. Performs work activities based on work orders.
Machine dies using Computer Numerical Control (CNC). This includes properly setting up the part or material in the fixtures and running the correct program.
Designs and writes CNC programs to fabricate production equipment.
Trains employees as needed.
Prepares tooling shipments for delivery to production and other foreign facilities.
Prepare blanks to produce dies & wedges.
Maintains adequate supply of blanks for dies & wedges.
Machines new dies & wedges as needed.
Inspect all re-coated wedges for coating quality.
Ensures shop schedules are met by distributing work to other tooling shop personnel.
Adjust work schedule as necessary to meet production demands.
Maintains inventory of perishables and other supplies, such as end mills, drills, inserts, die cases, wedge cases, machines oils, coolants, etc.
Maintains and services all machine tools and equipment in the tooling shop.
Maintains logs and data regarding all tooling activities performed.
Ensures all machining chips, scrap metal or equipment and coolants are disposed of properly.
Work as the Lead-Machinist.
Maintains shop cleanliness.
May perform other reasonable, related business duties.
Keys to Success:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering preferred (or equivalent work experience).
3+ years of machine shop experience, which includes CAD, or equivalent – OR- Apprenticeship Program, or certification from technical school, and 5 years of experience as described above.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, blue prints, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to operate shop equipment including the following: CNC mill, lathes, hand grinders, cylinder grinder, and manual milling machine. Ability to use simple hand tools. Ability to use a PC and the following software: Windows XP or higher and Microsoft Office suite. Ability to design and write CNC programs.
