About Title VI Education Coordinator

  The Social and Community Services (SCS) Department is recruiting for a Title VI Education Coordinator for the Port Townsend School District to join their growing team!

  The Social and Community Services (SCS) Title VI Education Coordinator (Education Advocate) is responsible for the implementation of the Title VI Educational Program instructional component in the surrounding school districts. The Education Coordinator's primary responsibility is to support American Indian and Alaska Native Students (AI/AN) to achieve academic success, to thrive in school and beyond, and to be prepared to succeed in college and career. The Education Coordinator will work with the local school district administration, teachers and para-educator to support their efforts along with tribal agencies to meet the unique educational and culturally related academic needs of AI/AN Students. The Education Coordinator will be required to assist in obtaining documentation that identifies AI/AN students enrolled in the school district; coordinate identification of student academic needs with school staff; assist in managing student behavior; classroom organization; interaction and communication with students and their parent(s) or guardian(s); support school staff, parents, guardians, and other agencies.

  This is a part-time position located in Port Townsend working 6 hours a day, 4 days per week.

  Essential Functions

  Assist local school districts with the implementation and maintenance of educational assistance to identified AI/AN students according to the current Title VI grant plan.

  Obtain consent from parents/guardians for participation in optional Title VI services.

  Assist the AI/AN students within the classroom.

  Provide individual and small group academic and study skills instruction for identified AI/AN students.

  Manage AI/AN student eligibility lists.

  Recruit for the program and coordinate the required paperwork.

  Advocate with the school for educational needs for AI/AN students.

  Serve as a contact for parents and guardians of AI/AN students of local school districts.

  Maintain and provide written reports of program activities with each AI/AN student who has received Title VI.

  Meet with School Administration and Teachers for informational referral and coordination of Title VI services. Be lead point person for Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe and surrounding school districts.

  Participate in Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings, and advocate for any necessary intervention services.

  Make connections for AI/AN students to local internships and post-secondary education opportunities.

  Coordinate referrals for services and connect with tribal representatives regarding students academic progress and any need for intervention strategies within the local area.

  Adhere to all JST policies and procedures, including but not limited to standards for safety, work practices as described in the Occupational Exposure Control Plan, and ensuring confidentiality.

  Coordinate with the Place Based Learning Director at local school districts for school policies and procedures.

  Aid with training staff on culturally appropriate materials.

  Assist with curriculum building, such as Time Immemorial Curriculum.

  Work within the school’s databases to know what students need attention through data coordination.

  Assist the Title VI Parent Advisory Council and assist with parent organized activities.

  Perform additional duties as assigned.

  Requirements

  High School Diploma or equivalent required with three (3) years’ experience supporting supplemental educational services to AI/AN students.

  Knowledge of Indian culture and communities, or experience working with AI/AN people is desired.

  Exceptional interpersonal skills including effective verbal and written communication.

  Must be able to interact effectively with other staff, clients, parents, and the public.

  First Aid/CPR certification.

  Competent word processing skills are required, with a basic knowledge of Microsoft Office.

  Valid Driver’s License.

  Must be able to successfully pass criminal background investigation.

  Preferred Qualifications

  American Indian/Alaska Native preferences apply.

  Associate degree in education related fields preferred.

  Previous experience working in a childcare or pre-school setting preferred.

  Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks.

  Effective time management, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.

  Demonstrate initiative, work independently with little supervision.
