About THERAPEUTIC RADIOGRAPHER/RADIATION THERAPIST

Oncology is a fast-growing field in veterinary medicine and the demand for radiation therapy for pets has significantly increased in recent years.

As one of only 5 facilities in the UK offering this treatment, animals are referred to Southfields from all over England and even internationally. Southfields aims to lead the UK veterinary profession in the delivery and development of radiation oncology. Our oncology building houses a state-of-the-art oncology centre and includes a brand new Varian Truebeam® with on-board kV imaging (including 3D/4D CBCT, fluoroscopy, electron capability, RapidArc™ VMAT, and intensity-modulated radiation therapy. We perform stereotactic radiation therapy (SRT) daily. We also hold the respiratory-gating package and are in the process or arranging installation of an RGSC camera and 4DCT licenses to permit gated treatments. We will be one of only two veterinary centres in the world with this technology.

The radiation oncology service is led by a board-certified veterinary oncologist, who is a recognised specialist in both medical and radiation oncology. There is an additional double-boarded oncologist who is a member of the team.

The successful applicant will be a key member of a small team, where they will work with the minimum of supervision under the direction of the senior clinical oncologists within the current team of 2 additional veterinary-trained radiation therapists, interns, anaesthesia staff and registered veterinary nurses (RVNs).

The TR/radiation therapist is responsible for delivery of radiation therapy (including image-guided treatments) to veterinary patients, and for the support and development of this activity within the Southfields oncology team. This is a broad role and involves all stages of case processing from the time of CT/MRI imaging, CT simulation and immobilisation to discharge from hospital, client communications and administration, CT planning and contouring/radiation planning (support/training provided where needed).

The role holder will also be responsible for the day to day running of the radiation therapy service, including undertaking some appropriate associated administration work. Responsibilities will also include shared

responsibility for Health & safety, QA and servicing of Linac. It is a hands-on role and requires routine interactions with patients so a love of animals and willingness to undertake animal handling is essential. Training will be provided where necessary.

A major component of the role will be to facilitate efficient and accurate delivery of radiotherapy treatments and ensure that this is performed by the other members of the radiotherapy team, with appropriate monitoring and clinical governance.

Vitally, the successful applicant will demonstrate excellent client care and communication skills, participating knowledgeably in post-treatment client contact, offering guidance and support to owners following their pet’s procedure.
