  Description of Job

  Work Unit Information:

  The Disease Control and Public Health Response (DCPHR) Division is one of nine divisions within the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. The division serves Coloradans by providing high-quality, cost-effective disease control, laboratory and public health preparedness and response services that promote healthy people in healthy places. Staff members focus on evidence-based best practices that protect the public from the spread of communicable diseases and the health impact of emergencies. A divisional priority is to modernize DCPHR’s data infrastructure to be prepared to respond to future public health emergencies. A key component of this response is laboratory testing. The demand for efficient, accurate and rapid laboratory results reporting requires instrumentation to be tightly integrated with laboratory data systems.

  What you will be doing:

  This position exists to receive diverse samples received by the laboratory for laboratory analysis consisting of environmental samples (soil, food, and water), human specimens (blood, urine, feces, cultures, respiratory) and animal carcasses. Duties include unpacking and sorting samples/specimens and test request documents, conducting inspections of materials for aberrations, entry of sensitive information into multiple Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS): e.g. SpecimenGate, Horizon etc, ordering tests and contacting customers to resolve discrepancies or gather any missing information for test orders.

  Data and Document Management

  Data entry for sample and specimen information. Data entry duties are required to meet keystroke speed and accuracy metrics.

  Sample Receiving

  Receives all incoming samples and specimens from customers and couriers, assists in distribution of sample collection kits, provides technical assistance for labeling of samples and containers. This position instructs customers on proper submission of samples and requisitions.

  Customer Service and Financial Transactions

  Responsible for receiving payment from customers in the form of a check or credit card. Payments must be processed accurately in the register and credit card machine when applicable.

  MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  Education and Experience:

  Two (2) years of experience doing data entry, shipping and receiving, cash and/or credit card transactions, maintaining inventories, or cleaning, storing, and disposing of materials and waste products or processing laboratory specimens or samples.

  This experience must be substantiated within the Work Experience section of your application. "See Resume" will not be accepted. In addition, part-time work will be prorated.

  Substitutions:

  Appropriate education in biology, chemistry, or closely related degree* will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

  *A copy of your transcript must be submitted at the time of application (Unofficial transcripts are acceptable.)

  Conditions of Employment:

  A pre-employment background check will be conducted as part of the selection process.

  This is designated as a safety-sensitive position so a pre-employment drug test is required.

  Crucial Status: Must be available in the event of an emergency, (e.g., bio-terrorist attack, chemical attack, disease outbreak or all hazards) and be required to report to work immediately at the regular or alternate location. During this time, travel restrictions may be in place.

  Preferred Qualifications and Essential Competencies:

  The preferred experience, competencies and abilities are highly desirable for this position and will be considered in selecting the successful candidate:

  Excellent customer service skills

  Experience in a team lead role

  Ability to maintain confidentiality

  Knowledge of safety practices in handling a variety of materials.

  Superior oral and written communication skills

  Current experience working in a laboratory

  Knowledge of laboratory procedures and processes.

  Excellent attention to detail

  Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment

  Ability to work in a structured environment to include assigned break/lunch times

  Excellent interpersonal skills

  Experience with Horizon database
