  The Hudson River Estuary Program helps people enjoy, protect, and revitalize the Hudson River and its valley. The program focuses on the tidal Hudson and adjacent watershed from the federal dam at Troy to the Verrazano Narrows in New York City, including upper New York-New Jersey Harbor. The program works with many groups to develop knowledgeable and effective stewards of the estuary, using an understanding of the river's ecology as a foundation for its work.

  Position Summary

  Fisheries technicians will provide technical assistance with the research and monitoring of non-native fish species (e.g., round goby and grass carp) in the Hudson River in cooperation with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's Hudson River Fisheries Unit located in New Paltz, NY.

  Core job duties will include but are not limited to:

  The use of fisheries gears (boat electrofishing, backpack electrofishing, trawls , haul seines, beach seines, gill nets ,and other types of fishing sampling gears) to collect round goby and grass carp.Operation of outboard boats for deploying and retrieving gearFish identification and enumerationCollection of biological data and water quality dataData entry and quality assuranceAcoustic tagging and fish dissectionsAssist with other long-term fisheries independent surveys to monitor striped bass, Atlantic sturgeon, American shad, river herring, American eel, and blue crab.

  Successful applicants must be willing to work challenging hours (e.g., early mornings/late evenings) in inclement weather, able to lift 50 pounds, able to maneuver in and out of boats, and able to hand operate all gears (strenuous pulling and lifting).

  Preference will be given to applicants with prior fisheries experience. Additional evaluation may be based on the applicant's knowledge and experience with computer use, databases, data analyses, and report preparation. Applicants must demonstrate that they are able to work independently and under challenging field conditions.

  This is a term 6-month position. Contingent on funding, positions will start on April 15, 2024, and will extend through September 17, 2024
