We are home to 25 faculty members focused on advanced research, teaching, and extension/outreach with a strong commitment to fostering diversity, equality, and inclusive excellence in all activities. The Department is also home to one of the largest and most reputable undergraduate programs in food science, and we take great pride in offering high quality, hands-on instruction to the next generation of food scientists. Our culture is one of innovation, collaboration, kindness, and mutual respect. To better serve this mission, we are seeking a qualified candidate to serve as a Teaching Laboratory Support Specialist.

The successful candidate will assist faculty members with instruction of students performing exercises in the laboratory and pilot processing areas as part of undergraduate courses and will also contribute to the instruction of laboratory or pilot plant components of outreach short courses and workshops. The candidate will also be actively involved in the Department’s new product design course; therefore, prior experience in product development is desirable.

The candidate will order supplies through the University’s procurement systems (e.g., SIMBA), will maintain an inventory of required chemicals, supplies, and laboratory equipment, and ensure the facilities required for instruction are well maintained and in good order. In some cases, the candidate will also be required to acquire laboratory supplies and raw materials from local vendors, therefore a driver’s license is required. The candidate will also maintain safety procedures and records for the teaching laboratories and will coordinate with the facilities manager with respect to general safety protocols.

Typical minimum requirements include a Bachelor’s degree or higher in Food Science or closely related field, and 4 or more years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience . Previous experience in a laboratory setting is required, and previous experience in a food processing facility or pilot plant is highly desirable.

The ideal candidate is a strong self-starter, and both enjoys and is comfortable working with students. The successful candidate has demonstrated the ability to work independently as well as in a collaborative team-based environment and is detail-oriented. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills are essential for the position, as are good written and oral communication skills.

This position requires the following clearances: This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.
