About Teaching and Training Specialist

  We are seeking a Teaching and Training Specialist who will reporting to the Department Administrator and Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Academic Affairs, this position supports the education mission of the Chemistry Department by performing and coordinating the development and administration of training programs where the graduate and undergraduate programs intersect. This position will oversee graduate and undergraduate teaching assistants (TAs) for the Introductory Chemistry and Organic Chemistry courses each semester. Additionally, this position includes the evaluation, creation, and supervision of training for all Introductory Chemistry TAs and Organic Chemistry lecture TAs. This position requires coordination with faculty to develop the administrative tools and data systems for strategic planning that advance the department's undergraduate experience for the students, faculty, and department. This position is grant-funded through June 30, 2028.

  Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  Training (40%)

  Work closely with the Teaching Faculty, Director of Graduate Studies, Director of Undergraduate Studies, and Department Chair(s) to coordinate and administer observation of each new graduate student and undergraduate student teaching assistant twice a semester in their first year and once each subsequent semester.

  Prepare, analyze, and disseminate self-evaluations from first-time TAs and meet in small groups with the TAs.

  Gather and analyze data from evaluations to assess strengths and challenges and tailor individual teaching support for TAs.

  Identify and evaluate specific areas in need of development in the training of TAs and work with teaching faculty and department administration to establish best practices to address these needs.

  In cooperation with evaluation experts at the CTEI, evaluate the effectiveness of training programs and recommend improvements.

  Support TAs by organizing and running (bi)weekly instructional team meetings.

  Assist with Orientation Week programming for TAs.

  Manage Undergraduate & Graduate Teaching Assistants (40%)

  Recruit undergraduate TAs from a pool of candidates recommended by faculty.

  Work with the departmental payroll representatives to facilitate the hiring, onboarding, and orientation of TAs.

  In conjunction with Teaching Faculty, develop and deliver an orientation session for lecture and lab teaching assistants, to be included in Orientation Week.

  Assign and schedule graduate and undergraduate TAs to lecture and/or lab duties; coordinate absences and replacements; and approve timecards of undergraduate TAs.

  In conjunction with faculty, develop and maintain supplemental instruction materials.

  Communication & Data systems (15%)

  Maintain the schedules and other electronic sources for graduate and undergraduate TAs.

  Liaise with partner offices (Academic Support and Office of Student Success) to ensure alignment of training, time, and expectations for tutors and supplemental instructors to support the mission of the Introductory Chemistry and Organic Chemistry courses.

  Liaise with key partners to maintain data systems and records of assignments, assessments, retention, and survey responses across and between courses and sections.

  Additional (5%)

  Minimum Qualifications

  Bachelor's Degree.

  Three year's experience in training education or an administrative-related setting.

  Preferred Qualifications

  A Bachelor's or Master’s in Chemistry or Chemistry Education is preferred.

  Classroom teaching and/or teaching coach experience is strongly preferred.

  Starting Salary Range: Min $62,300 - Mid $85,650 - Max $109,000 Annually (Commensurate with experience)

  JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
