Position Summary:
Supports
the Mission, Vision and Values of the Hospital.
The surgical assistants perform preoperative, intra-operative and
postoperative duties under the direction and supervision of the surgeon, and RN
in accordance with hospital policy, laws, and regulations. Functions in a teaching mode, sharing
experiences and knowledge with new staff members when delegated.
Essential Functionsand Responsibilities:
Supports the mission and vision of McLarenPort Huron through behaviors that reflect and integrate our values, asevidenced by observation, peer and customer feedback.
Demonstrates assessmentskills by collaborating with RN to assure correct instrumentation or suppliesand sutures are available as evidenced by no interruptions of case due to lackof supplies
Reports findings of ongoingassessment to Registered Nurse assigned to the patient and other appropriatehealth care personnel.
Demonstrates knowledge ofalterations in patient status that would affect basic lab values andcommunicates this to appropriate health care personnel
Demonstrates ability to respond quickly andappropriately to control unexpected intra-operative
Contributes to the initialand the updating of the surgeon’s preference cards on assigned procedures asevidenced by peer and supervisory observation
Contributes to the planningof specific approaches to meet the identified needs of assigned patients andtheir families
Collaborates with the otherclinical and ancillary departments in identifying approaches to meet thecontinuing care as evidenced by peer and supervisory observation
Plans for patient safetyusing the hospital’s safety standards as observed by RN and/or peers
Prepares properinstrumentation, equipment and supplies required for a procedure as indicatedby peer review
Assures that propertechniques and practices are used according to Operating Room standards of careas indicated in QA audits
Contributesto the implementation of the patients’ plan of care.Delivers direct patient careas delineated within Surgical Technologist scope of practice and the standardsof nursing procedures of the hospital as evidenced by documentation and RNobservation
Demonstrates commitment topersonal career growth and competency and as outline by department.
All other duties asassigned.

Ability to perform competently instressful/emergency situations; interpersonal and communication skills toeffectively work in an operative environment with the surgeons,anesthesiologists and other members of the health care team; effectivejudgment, problem solving and decision making abilities with limited directionand/or supervision; and ability to think in a systematic and logical manner toensure safe, quality care.Qualifications:
Required:
High school graduate or equivalent
Second year student, in good standing, in a
Surgical Technology accredited approved program.
Progressive active enrollment in SurgicalTechnology classes contributing to degree completion within one year.
Preferred:
Previous hospital experience
