JOB REQUIREMENTS: Overview Works under the direction of a surgeon tofacilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgicalprocedures, ensuring thatthe operating room environment is safe, thatequipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure isconducted underconditions that maximize patient safety. Possessesexpertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic techniqueandcombines the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, andimplementation tools and technologies to facilitate aphysician\'sperformance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. Mayinclude day, evening, night, weekend, holiday,and/or on-call hours.Report-back time for on-call per department guidelines. Performs otherduties as assigned. Responsibilities Essential Duties andResponsibilities Handles the instruments, supplies, and equipmentnecessary during the surgical procedure. Has an understanding oftheprocedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon.Has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure qualitypatient careduring the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil formaintenance of the sterile field. Assists the surgical team before,during, and after surgery by performing the following duties: Checksinstruments, supplies, and equipment needed for surgical procedures.Scrubs, gowns, gloves, and sets up sterile table with instruments andsupplies, equipment and medications/solutions needed foreach procedureAssists with patient placement and positioning on the table. Assists indraping sterile field according to procedure/physicianpreference.Performs appropriate counts for sponges, needles, and instruments withcirculator according to policy prior to the operation andbefore incisionis closed. Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants. Creates andmaintains sterile field. Maintains highest standard of steriletechniqueduring procedure. Passes instruments, etc. to surgeon duringprocedure. May sponge operative site, hold retractors during surgery,cut suture andcauterize previously clamped vessels as directed bysurgeon. Prepares sterile dressings. Assists other members of team withcleaning the operating room after each procedure. Assists in preppingroom for the nextpatient. Participates in department performanceimprovement activities.
