  Position Summary:

  To facilitate and coordinate the daily operation of the Surgical Services Department by ensuring that the system for delivery of the instruments and related accessories/equipment results in meeting the needs of the surgical team and quality surgical patient care.

  Qualifications:

  CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) Must possess and maintain current Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) certification upon hire or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) have certification through CBSPD as a Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) within 1 year. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position

  Work may occasionally require travel to other UPH facilities/hospitals

  requireduired to drive your own vehicle for business purposes

  SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.Basic computer knowledge using word processing, spreadsheet, email, and web browser. Multicultural sensitivityCritical thinking skills using independent judgment in making decisions.

  Essential Functions:

  Coordinates the processing of surgical instruments and equipment to ensure their availability for use in surgical procedures.* Ensures correct and adequate number of instruments available for surgical procedures.* Makes changes in checklists as instruments added or removed. * Indicates when instrument sets are incomplete.* Validates completion of sets by initialing.* Coordinates work flow and supervises work practices as relates to instruments. * Ensures staff follows the routines in assigned area.* Acts as resource for reprocessing area.* Avoids conflicts through appropriate allocation of instruments and equipment.* Assists, if needed, with immediate instrumentation for surgical procedures in progress.* Answers questions about sterility of items.* Maintains instrument -repair program.* Maintains instrument-tracking system.* Assists with case cart system.

  Applies knowledge of surgical instruments, surgical intervention, and principles of asepsis and sterilization to the assigned duties.* Identifies need for changes in instrument sets and makes recommendations accordingly.* Collaborates with RN's, ST's, private scrubs and surgeons regarding changing needs.* Assists with product evaluation related to instruments. Supports usage of instruments and equipment during instrument evaluation. Collects and summarizes data related to instrument usage.* Documents significant information related to instruments.* Maintains current, accurate, and legible records.* Facilitates open communication with appropriate resources.* Assesses needs of each specialty service.* Teaches others unique characteristics of specific instruments and equipment

  Participates in an instrument inventory control system that ensures adequate supply with budgetary guidelines.* Supports systems that guarantee minimal loss of instruments.* Participation in development and maintenance of inventory control system.* Maintains established par levels of instruments. Assess established levels for needed changes and notifies appropriate people when levels drop below established par.* Provides input to appropriate person(s) of changing trends in instrument usage.* Assesses instruments for needed repair. Identifies necessity for repairs, concurs with appropriate contacts and follows established process for repairs.* Receives instruments following repair and returns to stock or proper set.* Spot-checks completed instrument trays for accuracy.* Maintains tray assembly checklists and instrument pictures.

  Follows guidelines for care and maintenance of instruments as established by department, regulatory and professional agencies.* Practices principles of aseptic technique in all functions of the position.* Applies current sterilization principles and practices to daily routines.* Keeps records related to sterilization processes.* Demonstrates knowledge of standard safety practices related to carrying instruments and equipment.* Demonstrates knowledge excellence of the care and handling of surgical instruments.* Completes appropriate competencies for the reprocessing of surgical instruments.* Maintains knowledge base of manufacturer's instructions including how to access additional resources.* Demonstrates the integration of individual efforts within the unit.* Team work with other personnel internal and external to the department.* Seeks opportunities for skill development and continued education through attendance of in-services, care conferences, educational offerings, reading professional articles.* Flexibility and adaptation to changing unit needs. Accepts, assists with and supports unit changes with explanation.* Responds promptly, accurately, and efficiently in unit crisis.* Utilizes time productively, changing priorities as needed to accommodate unit needs.* Accepts additional duties as assigned
