Veterinary Specialists of Birmingham located in Birmingham, AL are looking for a veterinary technician to join our surgical department.
Job Description:
Client relations including but not limited to obtaining in-depth histories, client education, creation and communication of estimates and invoices, preparing prescriptions and communicating discharge orders. Ability to work with clients and patients in a professional, friendly, hospitable manner.
Receive, handle, and treat patients with skill, compassion, accuracy, and care including monitoring during anesthesia, administering fluids, assisting in diagnosing, surgery and general and specialized nursing care.
Accurately dispense and administer medications.
Ability to observe animal appearance and activity for general physical condition, obvious signs of illness, disease, and discontent.
Maintaining accurate controlled drugs
Familiar with basic surgical principles including but not limited to scrubbing in to assist during surgical procedures.
Knowledge of normal vital parameters and recognition of abnormal and associated treatment
Establishing an anesthetic protocol; induction, endotracheal intubation, maintenance and monitoring anesthesia; recognition of abnormal vital parameters and their associated treatments; the use and maintenance of anesthesia machines (including different circuits) and multi-parameter monitoring equipment (including, but not limited to: ECG, SP02, ETC02, NIBP);
Surgical preparation and aseptic technique; post-operative recovery, monitoring, and pain control
Basic knowledge of surgical equipment including instruments, suction, cautery, etc., and their associated cleaning techniques and care
Basic knowledge of bandaging and splinting techniques
Use of proper technique and positioning for digital radiography
Knowledge of venipuncture and sample collection procedures
Input data into computer software system; including but not limited to all communication between clients, referring veterinarians, reference laboratories and any other patient specific communication.
Regular attendance and timeliness are essential functions to fulfill the requirements of this position.
Work well with all team members and ensure that your actions support the hospital, the doctors, and the practice philosophy.
Position Requirements:
Physical: Must have the strength and stamina to work on feet throughout shift and lift up to 30 pounds. Perform general physical activities that require bending, standing, stooping, moving from room to room, sit, talk, and listen; may be required to walk or stand for long periods of time; will use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel; will reach with hands and arms.
Ergonomic: An employee in this position must be capable of safely working in environment with potential exposure to hazardous materials, infectious and zoonotic diseases.
Other: Reliable, self-starter. An employee in this position must have a sense of caring for animals, ability to multi-task and prioritize.
Anticipated Schedule:
4-day work week, Monday-Thursday 8am-6pm
Rotating on-call weekends
Compensation:
$20-24 per hour
Shift differential available.
