  Summary This Supervisory Medical Instrument Tech (Diagnostic Ultrasound) position is in the VA Maine Healthcare System, located in Togus, Maine. This position is full-time at 40 hours per week. Responsibilities The Supervisory Medical Instrument Tech has the overall responsibility for the coordination and performance of the ultrasound sections, at Togus and 2 Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs). In the absence of the Radiology Manager and/or designee, serves as a contact person for Ultrasound technologists. He/she works closely with the Ultrasound technologists, radiologists, clinicians and clerical staff to assure optimum quality control, efficient coordination of activities, high quality diagnostic exams, and patient and provider satisfaction. Duties include, but are not limited to: Monitors Ultrasound processes, ensuring image orders are accurate and are scheduled, secured, and successfully transmitted to PACS, making them available for ultrasonography interpretation in a timely manner. Develops formal orientation and training schedule for new staff and students and provides input into the evaluation of new and current employees. Evaluates technical imaging quality of staff to ensure quality and standards compliance, as well as providing feedback to management on technical aspects of work. Monitors and reports on the status and progress of work and uses good judgment in making necessary adjustments to accomplish the workload in accordance with established procedures. Ensures that technologists practices patient and self-safety processes and follows safety guidelines, reference to patient movement and lifting and the movement of equipment as needed. Maintains professional, cooperative, and collaborative behavior when working with other employees, patients, and visitors. Maintains adequate quantities of supplies to meet workload demands through a systemized process of ordering, receipt and inventory control. Works collaboratively with the PACS Administrators and the Radiology Manager and/or assigned designee, to report equipment malfunction in a timely manner. Maintains skills through independently performing general and specialized Ultrasound procedures in advanced levels of complex treatment situations. Alerts the Radiology Manager and/or assigned designee when there are instances of tardiness, staff absences from the work station, or any other issues that impact the timekeeping of the service. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday (Alternate work schedule may be available) Compressed/Flexible: Not Authorized Telework: Available This position is authorized for telework but has not been authorized as virtual or remote (i.e., the must be able to work at the location the position is being announced for). The incumbent may be required to travel to other VA campuses and CBOC's. Current and former Federal employees must submit copies of their most recent SF-50, (Notice of Personnel Action). The SF-50 must identify the position title, series, grade, step, tenure and type of service (Competitive or Excepted). In some cases, more than one SF-50 may be required to show a higher grade previously held. No award SF50's will be accepted, where they don't provide the sufficient information. Narrative responses to the knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) will be required from the selectee in order to proceed with the appointment. Requirements Conditions of Employment You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this job. Qualifications Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part. Certification: Registration by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) or by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) is highly desirable. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: Applicant must meet the Basic requirement and Specialized Experience requirements for the position. GS 10 Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-09), which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. This experience must demonstrate possession of the knowledge required in order to provide medical instrument technician services in the functional specialties supervised. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs : Advanced knowledge of complex and non-standard treatment and examination procedures and techniques. Ability to plan and assist in the establishment of a completely integrated treatment and examination program. Ability to evaluate new products and equipment and make recommendations concerning developments which would improve operations. Ability to manage the fiscal matters of the functions supervised (which would include fund controls, contracts, and equipment expenditures), forecast resource and equipment needs, and administer the allocated budget. Knowledge of and ability to provide the full range of supervisory duties which would include responsibility for assignment of work to be performed; performance evaluation; selection of staff; and recommendation of awards, advancements, and, when appropriate, disciplinary actions. Assign and evaluate the work of subordinate staff resolving problems which may interfere with patient examination or treatment Provide diagnostic ultrasonography technician services in more complex and non-standard cases Participate as an instructor in the facility's clinical training program References: VA HANDBOOK 5005/15 PART II APPENDIX G27 Physical Requirements: Physical Requirements: The physical demands of the work includes: Heavy lifting, 45 pounds and over; moderate carrying, 15-44 pounds; pushing up to 4 hours; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers, good dexterity (both hands required); prolonged walking, prolonged standing; repeated bending; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing (aid permitted); speed in working; and emotional stability. Must have the ability to stand and work while wearing a lead apron for possibly long periods of time. Education Additional Information Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
