The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is seeking applications formultiple Student Success Advisors for the Advising and Mentoring Unit inthe Office of Minority Student Affairs (OMSA). Founded in 1867, theUniversity of Illinois is one of the nation\'s original 37 publicland-grant institutions. The University of Illinois is home toapproximately 56,000 students and 12,000 faculty and staff.
The Office of Minority Student Affairs (OMSA) provides leadership indeveloping, implementing, and delivering student support services toimprove the retention, academic achievement, graduation, and success ofundergraduates at Illinois, particularly, students who identify asfirst-generation, historically underrepresented, low-income, and/oreducationally disadvantaged. OMSA promotes and develops educationalopportunities and enrichment activities to help facilitate theeducational and personal growth of student participants throughorganized activities and collaborative efforts with Student Affairsdepartments, the colleges and academic departments, and other campus andcommunity partners. The OMSA is comprised of two administrative areas:The Academic Services Center (ASC) which includes Advising and Mentoring(A&M), First-Generation Student Initiatives (1GEN), and Tutoring andAcademic Services (TAS); and TRIO, Administrative, Outreach, andBusiness Services (TAOBS). The OMSA\'s administers four TRIO programswhich include two programs for undergraduates: TRIO Student SupportServices, TRIO McNair Scholars Program, and two additional programs forpre-college populations: TRIO Upward Bound and TRIO Talent Search.
As a part of Student Success, Inclusion, and Belonging within StudentAffairs, OMSA provides support for students to reach their personal,academic, and professional goals through curricular and co-curricularengagement opportunities. OMSA reports to the Assistant Vice Chancellorfor Student Success, Inclusion, and Belonging (SSIB).
Job Summary
The Student Success Advisor is responsible for providing advising,mentoring and coaching to select freshmen and transfer students in theAdvising and Mentoring unit of the OMSA, as well as providingsupervision for a cadre of graduate staff. This position will workclosely with academic units to investigate and troubleshoot barriersthat prevent student success..
Duties & Responsibilities
Advising
Serves as an advocate and resource for assigned students and maintainfrequent, systematic contact with those students.
Collaborates with the colleges and departmental academic advisors toidentify students whose behaviors align with early alerts and referstudents for academic retention services.
Collaborates with the colleges and departmental academic advisors toassists students in understanding and negotiating the academic rules andregulations that govern academic eligibility, progress, and successfuldegree completion.
Builds, fosters and maintains intentional relationships with thecolleges departments and/or relevant campus units to ensure accuratedissemination of information.
Assist with the coordinating the OMSA communication strategy and sharessaid information with colleges, departments and/or relevant campusunits.
Directs purposeful discussion with students to identify academicstrengths and challenges, gauge adjustment to academic and social lifeon campus, and provide advice regarding viable pathways that may lead toenhanced student success.
Assists students in developing a student success plan, an informalco-curricular transcript and a realistic career pathway plan.
Maintains detailed and thorough notes n individual advising sessionsusing unit and campus level reporting mechanisms.
Assists with the development of reports, data analysis and assessment ofstudents\' first year term by term engagement
Participates in the drop-in rotation to advise students seekingassistance but are not specifically targeted to receive assignedmentoring services.
Maintains awareness of a variety of institutional information includingnew majors, minors, certificate programs, deadlines and important datesetc.
Maintains awareness of current trends and best practices regardingstudent outreach and/or retention; assist with developing retentionstrategies, and work closely with staff in implementing, evaluating, andimproving retention strategies.
Assigned Area of Specialization and Supervision
Identifies and coordinates the logistics and operations relating to theassigned area of specialization including but not limited to structure,planning, outreach and execution, and budget requests. Assigned areasmay include but are not limited to academic success/GRIT teaching and/orprogramming, continuing student experience, service learning andleadership, career development and engagement, admissions, diversity,equity and inclusion etc.
