The Opportunity
This position works out of our Pleasanton, California location in the Heart Failure Division. In Abbott’s Heart Failure (HF) business, we’re developing solutions to diagnose, monitor and manage heart failure, allowing people to restore their health and get on with their lives.
As a Staff Data Scientist, you will play a crucial role in shaping our data-driven strategies and contributing to the success of our Heart Failure initiatives. You will be responsible for designing, developing, and deploying advanced data science solutions to extract valuable insights from large and complex datasets. As a key member of our team, you must be capable of exhibiting a sense of inquisitiveness and a creative mind to uncover opportunities that will directly contribute to enhancing the quality of patient care and the development of innovative medical devices and therapy solutions.
What You’ll Work On
Data Analysis and Modeling:
Conduct exploratory data analysis to understand trends and patterns.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define project objectives.
Utilize large datasets from various sources, including medical devices and phenotype data.
Machine Learning and Statistical Analysis:
Develop and refine features for predictive modeling, ensuring that relevant clinical variables are incorporated effectively.
Build and validate predictive models for clinical outcomes, patient risk assessments, and other relevant applications, using appropriate machine learning algorithms.
Evaluate and optimize models for accuracy and performance.
Clinical Insights:
Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including medical experts, clinical research scientists, and engineers to identify clinically significant insights and patterns within the data.
Understanding of physiological systems and therapies in the cardiovascular space is a plus
Data Visualization:
Create informative data visualizations and dashboards to communicate findings and insights to non-technical stakeholders.Data Governance:
Implement data governance best practices to ensure data quality, integrity, and compliance with relevant regulations, such as HIPAA.Research and Innovation:
Stay updated with the latest developments in data science and machine learning to continually improve data analysis methodologies and techniques.
Identify opportunities for innovation and propose data-driven solutions.
Collaboration:
Collaborate with external partners, academic institutions, and healthcare providers to access additional data sources and research opportunities.Documentation:
Maintain comprehensive documentation of data analysis processes, methodologies, and findings.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related field plus 8 years of experience.
Master’s Degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related field plus 6 years of experience.
Proven experience in data analysis and modeling, preferably in the medical device or healthcare industry.
Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or R.
Strong knowledge of machine learning algorithms, statistical techniques, and data visualization.
Experience with healthcare data, including Electronic Health Records (EHR), is a plus.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to translate technical findings into actionable insights for non-technical stakeholders.
Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Familiarity with data privacy and security regulations, such as HIPAA.
Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) is a plus.
Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, cross-functional team environment.
Preferred Qualifications

The Opportunity
The Senior Staff Systems Engineer will be accountable for delivering system verification across the full CardioMEMS system in support of multiple ongoing projects. This role ensures the logical and systematic verification of system level design input and performance requirements accounting for technical, schedule, and cost constraints. You will be applying an expert understanding of applications, customer needs and use, verification best practices, test tools, and sub-system verification to streamline design verification.
Primary Responsibilities:
Lead verification projects with significant novelty and integration across various disciplines and team members. Apply a portfolio-centric approach to developing programs and verification solutions.
Build and improve system verification processes and methods for the CardioMEMS system of devices, which includes implanted MEMS devices, external medical electrical equipment devices, database and software-based products, and mobile application products.
Identify and implement tools, fixturing, testing automation methods, and other resources necessary for system verification.
Plan, develop, and execute system verification based on established system requirements, as an individual contributor and as a leader directing other test engineers.
Drive review and optimization of project-wide and cross-project verification efforts to ensure adequate coverage, minimize duplication, and increase transparency and understanding of system verification versus sub-system verification versus other types of testing.
Contribute to and support gathering, analyzing, and reviewing system level and sub-system requirements.
Develop, write, and review test plans, procedures, methods, and reports with excellent writing skills.
Foster collaboration with cross-functional teams and other leaders to drive work to completion and resolve issues. Successfully influence stakeholders. Communicate effectively with cross-functional teams and senior management. Keeps leadership informed of progress and issues.
Organize and manage work to deliver programs, leads in the execution of assigned work. Prioritize tasks by distinguishing urgent from important tasks and assess cost/benefit trade-offs.
Develop and apply an expert understanding of designated systems as well as serve as a subject matter expert for the development team regarding behaviors, implementation, system and sub-system verification methodologies, and the applicable technologies required to solve problems and deliver upon business objectives. Participate in broad cross-functional reviews of work output.
Apply industry best practices and applicable regulations to work area.
Comply with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, Company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments.
Required Qualifications:
Bachler’s Degree in Engineering (Computer, Electrical, Software, or Biomedical), Computer Science, or related discipline
9+ years of experience in a similar position, including system verification and validation, systems integration experience, and/or end-to-end (ideation to commercialization) technical product development experience
Experience leading and managing other engineers to complete project work
Experience working in new product development of medical device industry
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with ability to communicate to all levels of the organization
Ability to work within a team and as an individual contributor in a fast-paced, changing environment
Ability to collect, organize, and analyze data using statistical methods
Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced degree in Engineering (Computer, Electrical, Software, or Biomedical), Computer Science, or related discipline with 10 years of work experience
Experience and expertise with systems consisting of hardware, software, mobile app, and cloud components
Experience and expertise with systems with RF, electromagnetics, ASICs, Bluetooth, and NFC technologies
Class III implantable medical device experience
Demonstrated ability to effectively integrate information from varied disciplines including Clinical Medicine, Engineering, Marketing and Regulatory Affairs

The base pay for this position is $95,000.00 – $190,000.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
