JOB REQUIREMENTS: POSITION SPECIFICS Title: Specimen Processor FTE: 1.0FTE (40 hours/week) Schedule: 11:00am - 7:30pm Holiday Rotation: 3-4holidays per year (rotated) Weekend Rotation: Every 3rd weekend On CallRequirements: None POSITION SUMMARY Performs venipuncture and capillarypunctures to procure specimens for laboratory analysis. Serves patientsof all ages from newborn through geriatric. Performs clerical functionssuch as filing, word processing, answering telephones, faxing results,scheduling, and preparing specimens to be sent to referencelaboratories. Performs urine toxicology and alcohol collectionsaccording to DOT guidelines. Maintains toxicology and laboratorysupplies. Performs CLIA-waived and moderately complex testing. Maintainsbilling and coding for laboratory procedures. POSITION TECHNICALRESPONSIBILITIES Specimen Collection 1. Listen attentively, communicateeffectively, and meet patient\'s needs by answering their questions inorder to promote a positive relationship. 2. Identify patient followingthe proper patient identification procedures. 3. Collect and identifyspecimens for transfusion service testing. 4. Direct patients to blooddrawing area and restroom in order to obtain the ordered sample. 5.Receive specimens delivered to the lab and directly from patients toperform requested lab tests. Documents specimen collection informationcorrectly on all specimen records. 6. Perform CLIA waved and moderatelycomplex testing within the scope of the clinic testing menu. 7.Demonstrate competence and works independently in essential phlebotomyprocedures sufficient to perform at a satisfactory level withoutsupervision. 8. Inquire about patient status, including fasting and timeof last medication when collecting specimen. 9. Perform venipunctures,finger sticks, heel sticks, blood culture collections to obtain a bloodsample for ordered tests. Patient collection settings may includehospital inpatients and outpatients, nursing home residents, pediatricand newborn patients, and emergency and trauma room patients. 10. Usegood clinical judgment in the selection of the puncture site appropriatefor the age of the patient. 11. Distribute proper specimen containersand instructs patients on collection of random and 24-hour samples. 12.Administer Trutol glucose beverage and collects specimens of blood andurine from patients. 13. Teach Technical and University students inphlebotomy techniques. 14. Coordinate specimen collection procedures.15. Perform Urine/Blood non-DOT and DOT drug screen collections. 16.Process paper work for non-DOT and DOT drug screen collections,including faxing MRO copies and mailing employer copies. 17. Maintainadequate supplies, collection containers and Chain of Custody forms forurine drug screen collections. 18. Verify specimen requirements for alllaboratory tests including reference laboratory tests. Ability to relaydetailed specimen collection information to appropriate personnel. 19.Process samples per specimen collection/processing procedures.
