The College of Music seeks an Academic Advisor position (12 months, 100% time). The advisor is responsible for academic advising for a shared caseload of approximately 650 students as part of the College of Music advising team. The advisor will manage the case load in a way that is data driven and promotes inclusion, retention, persistence, and student success through proactive interactions and academic interventions. This position is a full-time primarily in-person position that requires occasional evening and weekend commitments.
Advising responsibilities will include:
Holistic and proactive academic advising focused around enrollment and degree planning for undergraduate and graduate students.
Attendance at university, and college level trainings, meetings, and functions.
Participating in new student orientation sessions throughout the year for first year undergraduate, graduate and transfer students and provide a bridge for current students moving from our undergraduate to graduate program. Planning and assisting with programs, campaigns and proactive advising strategies that enrich the student experiences and increase student touch points. Using information technology to support students including MSU's advising and student information systems, University and College websites, Microsoft Office and Teams, Google Docs, and Zoom. Conducting degree audits, maintaining accurate records, and monitoring student progress on a regular basis. Maintain current student records and data entry for CSS compliance and align College of Music policies with NASM standards to maintain accreditation.
Utilizes confidential information and maintains FERPA requirements while implementing academic policies, procedures, and protocols with high ethical standards.
Develops and maintains a strong working knowledge of campus academic, administrative, and personal support services for students, as well as academic policy and campus opportunities. Researches, identifies, and connects students to appropriate College and University resources. Assists in planning, conducting, and evaluating student learning opportunities and trainings such as major exploration, orientations, student learning supports, and outreach activities. Excellent communication skills; including an ability to work diplomatically and effectively with campus partners. Demonstrated ability to work with students and colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
