About Software Development Manager, Defensive Security - VMR Engineering

Description

Here in Amazon Stores Security, we have that special role just for you! The Vulnerability Management and Remediation Engineering team is building the next generation of mission critical security systems for protecting Amazon assets. Our innovations handle manage security in real time pushing scalability limits on cloud to new highs. These applications enable Amazon defensive security and security management teams globally. Our customers are Amazon, internal stakeholders, and Amazon’s customers. Our engineers work directly with stakeholders, get close to customers' needs, and are empowered to take technical risks to build the best-in-class software with respect to quality, scale, and insights. The technical foundation this team builds, helps keep all of Amazon including business units (Fulfillment Centers, Physical Stores, Whole Foods, Fresh, etc.) secure.

We are looking for an ambidextrous and dynamic manager who has a passion for making internal business teams successful. The ideal candidate has deep technical experience, preferably in AWS technologies, strong verbal and written communication, and excels at balancing priorities between a near-term and long-term focus. They know how to position their team to meet consistent shifting demands of the business. We desire someone who is passionate about coaching, and helping engineers achieve their desired potential, while getting hands on with designs to shape the team's high scale systems.

Key job responsibilities

You will manage and mentor a high performing team of engineers, fostering a collaborative environment, conducting performance reviews, and promoting professional growth.

You will define and drive the technical vision and roadmap for our cloud-based security products and services, while collaborating with cross-functional teams to align on requirements and priorities.

You will review architecture design and overseeing software development of highly scalable systems.

You will communicate technical concepts, project status, and risk assessments to stakeholders at all levels, both technical and non-technical.

You will ensure that security is integrated throughout the software development lifecycle, from design to deployment and promote continuous innovation to enhance the security, performance, and scalability of our cloud-based solutions.

A day in the life

As the manager of the team you own vision and mission of the team. You will attend daily operations calls, team standups, and meet with stakeholders regarding short-term/long-term projects. You will weekly meet with your team to discuss their career goals, and passions. You will lead operational excellence initiatives. You will partner with your Sr. SDEs to create architectures that will scale for the long term. You will provide guidance to senior leaders on long-term technical strategies and approaches to solving problems within your domain.

About the team

The team is led by a tenured Amazon leader, and is supported with Sr. SDEs. The total team size will be about 7 when the build out is complete. They will lead the charge on building a new Tier-1 systems for all vulnerability management.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience

5+ years of engineering team management experience, including team building, mentoring, and performance management

10+ years of leading the definition and development of highly scalable cloud applications in programming languages (Java/Python/TypeScript/Shell etc.) using AWS services (S3, Lambda, SQS, Fargate/ECS, DDB, EMR, Spark, SageMaker, Bedrock, etc.)

Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, CI/CD, testing, security reviews, and secure DevOps

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Preferred Qualifications

Hands-on experience with hyper scale applications development using AWS technologies

Experience in a relevant field or professional certifications (e.g., CISSP, CCSP, CSSLP).

Experience with cloud security automation and infrastructure as code (IaC) tools.

Proven track record of delivering high impact outcomes in fast changing environment by force multiplying through others

Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
