  Brief Position Overview

  Montana State University Extension, through a partnership with and funding from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – Education ( SNAP -Ed), serves individuals who are on SNAP benefits or eligible for SNAP .

  The SNAP -Ed Extension Instructor’s primary function is to partner and collaborate with local agencies, schools and organizations to implement the SNAP -Ed program in Big Horn County/ Crow Reservation / Northern Cheyenne Reservation. The Extension Instructor will teach youth and adults about nutrition, physical activity, food safety, and food resource management using a series of approved lessons. The Extension Instructor will also collaborate with community partners on projects related to policy, system, and environment ( PSE ) which address healthy food access needs. Position specific training and orientation will be provided to the successful candidate to prepare them to carry out job responsibilities in the communities served.

  General Statement

  This position is located in Hardin, MT.

  Montana State University Extension, through a partnership with and funding from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – Education ( SNAP -Ed), serves individuals who are on SNAP benefits or eligible for SNAP . The SNAP -Ed Extension Instructor’s primary function is to partner and collaborate with local agencies, schools and organizations to implement the SNAP -Ed program in Big Horn County/ Crow Reservation / Northern Cheyenne Reservation. The Extension Instructor will teach youth and adults about nutrition, physical activity, food safety, and food resource management using a series of approved lessons. The Instructor will also collaborate with community partners on projects related to policy, system, and environment to address healthy food access needs. Position specific training and orientation will be provided to the successful candidate to prepare them to carry out job responsibilities in the communities served.

  Duties and Responsibilities

  Manage and coordinate the SNAP -Ed Nutrition Education program in the county and reservation by organizing all SNAP -Ed activities, from marketing, recruitment, teaching nutrition education, and collaboration with local agencies that provide services to SNAP recipients or those eligible.

  Develop and maintain working partnerships with local organizations that serve families with limited-resources.

  Recruit adults with low income to participate in the nutrition classes that cover healthy eating, food safety, physical activity, and a hands-on food demonstration.

  Teach youth in Title One schools, afterschool programs, or in other programs throughout the county and reservation using approved youth curricula.

  Collaborate with local organizations and relevant coalitions to support changes that improve the food and physical activity environment for persons and families with low income. This may include working on projects with food pantries, school wellness committees, farmers markets, community or school gardens, or other applicable community project work.

  Complete all reports on time including travel, purchasing, activity and time reports, and mid-year progress reports. Maintain current and accurate records and reports.

  Travel to various sites in the county and reservation to teach classes, collaborate on PSE projects, and meet with local organizations, agencies, and community coalitions to complete the position goals and duties as required.

  Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  Bachelor’s degree in nutrition, health, social work or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  Demonstrated ability to work with community leaders and build effective collaborations with partners.

  Demonstrated ability motivating adults and children to participate in the learning process.

  Demonstrated ability to assess participant needs and responses and to adjust lessons to the audience.

  Demonstrated ability and experience to lead and interact effectively with adults in small group settings and youth in the classroom setting.

  Demonstrated ability to use technology (computer and programs) to accurately input data, establish and maintain records and reports, and use a computer in the classroom.

  Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  Previous experience teaching nutrition to adult and youth.

  Demonstrated understanding of policy, system, and environment work.

  Experience working with diverse audiences.

  Lived experience with issues such as food insecurity or poverty.

  Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

  Continuation of employment is contingent upon availability of funding.

  Must possess currently or be eligible to obtain a valid State of Montana Driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record (less than 12 points), or have other reliable means of transportation. Must have access to a vehicle to use for work (mileage will be reimbursed), and have minimum vehicle liability insurance. Do NOT send a copy of the driver’s license.
