The position will provide researchers with training, expertise, and support on Confocal, Fluorescent, and Brightfield microscopes and our Incucyte S3s. The position will be responsible for training users on all microscopes and providing researchers with advice on sample preparation and image optimization during sample acquisition and analysis. Additional responsibilities include maintenance and calibration of all microscopes and optimizing and updating user manuals. Focus of Job Responsibilities Services to Hormel Institute Shared Instrument Imaging Users - 65% Train and assist users in the proper use of LSM 900 Confocal, Fluorescent, and Brightfield Microscopes Train and assist users with image analysis software Consult with researchers on experimental design, including sample preparation and proper instrumentation. Help users with image analysis problems Train users on Incucyte S3 including image acquisition and analysis Maintenance, Calibration, and Operating Procedures - 15% Update operator manuals for all Microscopes and Incucytes Develop and implement appropriate maintenance and calibration protocols Help coordinate the acquisition and implementation of new equipment Training other shared resources staff - 10% Responsible for training Core technician and other Shared Resources staff on the use of microscopes, maintenance, calibration, and analysis software Keep current on microscope technology and apply it to research projects Keep current on software applications Microscopy Core Organization - 5% Order supplies as needed, and keep the core area organized Other responsibilities as assigned - 5% The Research and Innovation Office(RIO) and The Hormel Institute endorses a "work with flexibility" approach that offers a welcoming and flexible work environment where everyone is inspired to do their best. This position has been designated as Flexible Work Profile One. Flexible Work Profile One is expected to work primarily on-site. Your office will be located at The Hormel Institute in Austin, MN. The Hormel Institute management retains the right to modify flexible work arrangement agreements on a temporary or permanent basis for any reason at any time. Qualifications Required Qualifications BS/BA degree and two years of related experience or a combination of education and work experience to equal six year Preferred Qualifications Experience in confocal, fluorescence, and brightfield microscopy image acquisition and analysis Experience with live cell imaging Experience with Tissue Processing, Paraffin Embedding, and Microtomes Knowledge of H&E staining, IF, IHC, and other staining procedures Knowledge of Sartorius Incucyte Imaging systems Strong computer skills Strong written, verbal, and customer service skills Willingness to help researchers with both trivial and advanced aspects of imaging projects Willingness to help with other instrumentation Physical & Environmental Requirements Must be able to lift 25 pounds. About the Department The Hormel Institute is an independent biomedical research department within the University of Minnesota's Research and Innovation Office. Our scientists have complete access to the most cutting-edge technologies including a cryo-electron microscope (Titan Krios and Tecnai G2 Spirit Biotwin), FACS cell sorter, confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, protein crystallography robotics and diffraction system, nano-HPLC-AB SCIEX triple TOF 5600 mass spectrometry, Leica tissue processor, embedder and microtome, real-time PCR instrumentation, 5 racks of Linux GPU supercomputers for computational biology and bioinformatics, spectrophotometers, and Western blot imagers. The Hormel Institute is located in Austin, MN, conveniently located 35 miles from Rochester, MN, and 100 miles (1.5 hours) south of Minneapolis/St. Paul.
