  The New York Genome Center is seeking an accomplished Senior Software Engineer with a solid foundation in full-stack development and expertise in cloud migrations, cloud-native services, and integrating external solutions. In this role, you will be pivotal in advancing our application platform, making individual contributions, and collaborating with a team. You will craft high-caliber software that upholds industry standards, embodies efficient coding practices, follows DRY (“don’t repeat yourself”) programming principles, and aligns with our organization's dynamic requirements.

  Key Responsibilities:

  Including but not limited to the following:

  System Architecture: Develop modular, scalable systems with RESTful web APIs.

  Full-Stack Engineering: Deliver automation-first solutions across the full technology stack.

  Coding Excellence: Employ modern coding practices focusing on Python 3 for maintainable, scalable code.

  Quality Assurance: Create robust regression tests to ensure software integrity.

  Cloud Leadership: Guide the transition of homegrown applications to cloud environments like GCP and AWS.

  Product Oversight: Engage in product backlog management, requirements gathering, and solution validation.

  Peer Review: Perform thorough code reviews, enhancing code quality and knowledge sharing.

  Expert Advice: Offer technical guidance on architecture and best practices.

  Required Skills:

  Education: Bachelor's in Computer Science/Engineering or related field.

  Experience: 6+ years (or Master's plus four years) in relevant roles.

  Quick Learner: Ability to quickly grasp new domains and apply technical knowledge.

  Leadership: Demonstrated autonomy in leading small to mid-sized projects.

  Tech Proficiency: Strong object-oriented programming skills in Python 3, React, or similar technologies.

  Cloud Savvy: Hands-on experience with GCP, AWS, and RESTful APIs.

  Middleware Insight: Capability to develop middleware for diverse system integration.

  SDLC Knowledge: Well-versed in SDLC practices, including version control, testing, code review, and maintenance.

  Database Acumen: Working knowledge of PostgreSQL and data warehousing with BigQuery.

  Communication: Exceptional listening and communication abilities.

  Mentorship: Experience in guiding software engineers.

  Preferred Skills:

  Database Mastery: In-depth knowledge of PostgreSQL and BigQuery.

  Infrastructure Expertise: Proficiency with Docker and Terraform.

  CI/CD Experience: Skilled in continuous integration and delivery practices.

  Regulatory Understanding: Background in developing software compliant with FDA or HIPAA regulations.

  Security Consciousness: Awareness of application security and identity management.

  About NYGC: A cutting-edge environment for genomics

  NYGC is an independent, nonprofit academic research organization advancing genomic research. NYGC scientists and staff are furthering new approaches to diagnosing and treating neurological diseases and cancer through their unique capabilities in whole genome sequencing, RNA sequencing, state-of-the-art analytics, and the development of genomic tools. NYGC concentrates specifically on disease-based research in the following areas: neuropsychiatric disease (autism, schizophrenia, bipolar), neurodegenerative disease (ALS, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s), and cancer.

  Located in Lower Manhattan, the New York Genome Center was founded by and remains closely affiliated with the leading academic medical centers and research universities in the New York region, engaging in research projects with and for these institutions. Essential to our collaborative work is an outstanding faculty whose members typically hold a joint appointment at NYGC and a partner university. They support our scientific mission by conducting independent research in areas of mutual interest to us and the wider scientific community.

  Work Flexibility

  NYGC has established a flexible work policy to allow employees and other staff to balance their work, personal commitments, and commuting challenges. The incumbent in this position is eligible for a flexible work schedule and/or a hybrid work schedule, with supervisory approval.

  Salary & Benefits

  The pay range for this position is $116,000-153,000 per year; we expect to pay around $137,000, but the base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
