The Senior Graphics Specialist will serve as a pivotal creative force in the Office’s communication efforts, responsible for designing and producing educational and informational materials that reflect the mission and values of the office. Expertise in desktop publishing and graphic design, including proficiency in software tools like Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and PowerPoint, is crucial. In this role, effective collaboration and communication with departmental staff are essential. The Senior Graphics Specialist will translate departmental needs into impactful visual narratives. Organizational skills are key, with a focus on managing multiple projects and meticulously proofreading for format, spelling, and grammar. Examples Of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Create, develop, and code web applications and user interfaces using designated and specialized software languages and tools such as HTML, LMS, Microsoft Sharepoint and Drupal Content Management System.
Design, update, and/or maintain assigned website(s) and web pages to enhance ease of use, mobility, readability, and linkages; provide technical support and advice to department staff in how to best utilize websites as operational, management, and customer support tools; and conduct usability testing.
Coordinate with technical information technology/services staff or contractors to ensure that servers and browsers are configured appropriately for easy access and visibility while maintaining adequate security to ensure the appropriate audience.
Design and prepare layouts and create illustrations for pamphlets, bulletins, exhibits, posters, bulletin boards, flip charts, transparencies, flyers, bookmarks, letterhead. brochures, cards, reports and training materials.
Produce and distribute materials and newsletters; gather, compile and edit content; maintain subscriber lists; edit digital recordings for use in podcasts; advise staff and management on use of various media.
Design, construct and install educational exhibits and displays on a variety of subjects; construct diorama foregrounds and paint scenic exhibit backgrounds; arrange exhibit content to produce the most effective display; participate in the maintenance of exhibits, display cases and storage areas.
Maintain assigned website(s) to ensure consistent visual images by promoting uniform fonts, formatting icons, images, layout techniques, and modularization; promote proper use of web-based languages and stay abreast of developing standards.
Troubleshoot problems with website, software, online databases and interactive content; work with vendors on outsourced print and production work; train users on website services.
Develop and maintain online and web-based templates and forms for both staff and website visitors' use and convenience.
Perform skilled illustrating, lettering, painting and decorating.
Work with a variety of materials such as metal, wood, wax, plastic, cloth, leather, and plaster.
Maintain records of display materials on hand and on loan; estimate cost of displays and specify required materials and supplies; make budget recommendations for estimated year's expenses.
Select, order, and distribute art prints of paintings for public exhibit, maintain file of art prints purchased.
Make preliminary sketches of exhibits and layouts, etc.; discuss layouts and composition and recommend methods of visual presentation which include styles and size of type, color scheme, paper stock, and method of reproduction.
Research and confer with other staff members for the purpose of obtaining information necessary for the planning and construction of exhibits and displays; participate in field trips to obtain exhibit or study collection of materials.
May perform lead direction to assigned staff and/or contractors; train and oversee others in the technical skills of graphic and computer design.
Arrange for photographic enlargements and mounting of photographic panel displays.
Prepare and refinish cases, stands and cages, etc. of portable and installed exhibits.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Knowledge of:
Graphic design concepts, materials, techniques and equipment used in commercial art.
Printing processes, including formatting, layout, paper stocks, typefaces and sizes and multicolor reproduction.
Appropriate and relevant hardware, software applications and techniques utilized in standard graphic, website and multi-media design, development, and maintenance.
Fundamentals of computer and web-based programming and appropriate database accessing and linking.
Federal accessibility standards for web design.
Painting and sketching techniques.
Techniques, materials and equipment used in exhibit planning, design, construction, installation and maintenance.
Skill/Ability to:
Learn designated and specialized web design technology and adapt successfully to a rapidly and ever-changing technological area.
Mechanical and freehand lettering, freehand work in rendering drawings, tracing and charts.
Create proper lighting effects for exhibits and displays.
Proper use of tools, equipment materials and methods of modern exhibit construction design.
Operate large-scale printers, plotter, laminator and cutting machines for in-house production assignments.
Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:
Education: Equivalent to an Associate's degree from an accredited college in the use of computers, graphics and desktop publishing.
Experience: At least three years of experience in performing any combination of graphic design, website design, coding and maintenance, and/or desktop publishing work, which included performing layout and the production of camera-ready copy.
Physical Requirements
Walks, sits and reaches by extending hands and arms in any direction on a consistent and daily basis; stoops, kneels, crouches, and crawls on an occasional basis.
Uses finger dexterity to pick, pinch and type; grasps objects with fingers and palms; and perceives attributes of objects by touch on a consistent and daily basis.
Communicates verbally by listening and talking on a consistent and daily basis.
Dependent upon assignment, occasionally uses upper extremities to exert force to push and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally may lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Current County of San Mateo and County of San Mateo Superior Court of California employees with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, Confidential and Management extra-help/limited term, and SEIU or AFSCME represented extra help/limited term positions prior to the final filing date will receive five points added to their final passing score on this examination.

All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. All examinations will be given in San Mateo County, California and applicants must participate at their own expense.
