  Senior associate, country risk

  What CSI Does: The Country and Sector Intelligence (CSI) team is Canada’s foremost country and sector intelligence team. As a team, CSI has two branches, one is responsible for analyzing, forecasting, and assessing sector and industry trends and providing sector intelligence and information. The second branch is focused on country intelligence (economic and political).

  Collectively CSI develops our intelligence and insights to inform EDC’s decision-makers and Canadian exporters and investors. Internally, CSI provides country and sector insights that helps EDC make informed decisions when offering financial solutions in support of Canadian exporters and investors. Externally, CSI provides insight to Canadian companies through a variety of knowledge products, meetings with partners and customers and through other interactions such as speaking engagements, webinars, and other engagements.

  CSI develops and deploys country and sector intelligence through the following key functions:

  Production of sector monitoring, forecasts, and insights

  Production of several of EDC’s key products including our Sectors in Focus, Global Export Forecast, Country Risk Quarterly, Global Economic Outlook and others.

  Assignment of country risk ratings for over 150 markets.

  Delivery of over 300 customer interactions annually. These include speeches, webinars, and specific research.

  Application of this market intelligence insight to the assessment of relevant risks and opportunities on hundreds of financial transactions that EDC is supporting per year.

  Development of models (aligned with existing and new regulatory requirements) to produce country risk ratings for the main lines of business at EDC (e.g., Financing, Insurance, etc).

  The CSI team is constantly seeking ways to innovate the way in which we assess and share our market intelligence insights. As a result, we’re actively working on new products (like regional outlooks, sector briefings) and key initiatives related to writing and presentation of data, analytics, big data, modeling, and structured analytical techniques.

  We do this by fostering an environment of collaboration, rapid innovation, and the application of a strategic lens to everything we do. Our analysts liaise with Canadian companies, industry associations, Government of Canada Departments, IMF, World Bank, and the OECD among other groups. We have access to diverse and extensive sources of research and data. We offer annual training and networking opportunities to ensure our analysts remain connected and at the leading edge of industry best practices.

  Background on the Position: The successful candidate would be assigned a portfolio of countries and would be responsible for monitoring the key economic and political trends in those markets. Supported by a senior analyst on the team (mentor), the senior associate would also be responsible for generating country risk ratings. The successful candidate should have strong communication skills and understanding of how to communicate macroeconomic trends and data to varied audiences.

  The successful candidate will work closely with internal EDC business teams as well as external clients to assess economic and political impacts on EDC and its support for Canadian business in industries and how to adjust to sectoral trends.

  The successful candidate would also provide support on the production of CSI knowledge products.

  This position reports to the Manager, Country and Sector Intelligence (CSI).

  Defines problems, collects data, applies advanced economic or political, analysis and concepts and research skills, establishes facts, and draws valid conclusions.

  Evaluates the potential impact of international and market changes, and reports on economic or political forecasts that affect the business.

  Key Responsibilities

  Monitors and reports on political, economic, and business conditions in assigned markets.

  Analyses and forecasts economic, political, and financial trends relevant to the portfolio of markets given

  Communicates outlooks, forecasts, risks, technical and/or business information so that it is understood by individuals with diverse capabilities and interests.

  Supported by mentor, conducts country risk assessments in direct support of EDC financial transactions.

  Provides research support and assists in the development of knowledge products.

  Screening Criteria

  Completed undergraduate degree in economics, Political Science, International Relations, or in a related field;

  Minimum two years of work-related experience in sector analysis, economic forecasting, or related experience.

  Working knowledge of economic forecasting principles or political analysis.

  Asset

  Experience in communicating economic concepts and forecasts to a general audience.

  Bilingual in both official languages (French and English)

  Basic-moderate level proficiency in additional data analysis and visualization software (e.g.: SAS, STATA, Python, R, PowerBI)

  Salary Range:

  Salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $62,336 to $83,116 plus a performance-based incentive.Location

  Export Development Canada is a hybrid work environment.

  This role will be performed from EDC’s headquarters in Ottawa or from the Community Hubs in Toronto or Montreal or Calgary or Vancouver
