About Seasonal Motor Vehicle Operator

  Summary The primary purpose of the position is to operate one or more motor vehicles, which typically have an approximate gross vehicle weight of not more than 10,000 pounds. Responsibilities Operates and performs operator maintenance on one of more motor vehicles. Vehicles are driven on the basis of either specific trip assignments or regularly established schedules over public roads (or the equivalent) at highway speeds to transport, personnel, supplies, materials, or equipment and tools or to tow equipment throughout rural or urban areas (various kinds of traffic) and varying weather conditions. Loads cargo onto the vehicle, using appropriate tie-downs such as chains, binders, or straps for transit on public roads at highway speeds or under similar driving circumstances. Safely transports passengers or cargo to their destinations throughout rural or urban areas on park and/or public roads in a full range of traffic conditions (or the equivalent). Makes couplings between vehicle and towed equipment. Completes daily work and/or trip reports required. Performs routine custodial and laborer duties, including cleaning restrooms and other campground or visitor facilities, collects trash, makes minor repairs as needed. May be assigned to assist journeyman performing a variety of other duties such as painting, plumbing, carpentry, and electrical; assisting higher grade worker with maintenance of utility systems, including sewer and electrical distribution; trails and grounds work; and asphalt work and road maintenance by repairing pavement surfaces; painting/repairing refuse containers/dumpsters. This is an open continuous vacancy announcement. Applicants will be referred periodically throughout the announcement period. Final application disposition will be completed once all positions have been filled or the announcement reaches the end of the open period stated in the announcement. The first cut-off date is January 29th, 2024. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males. Direct Deposit: Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. Driver's License: You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Vehicle Operation: You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle. Uniform: You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. Government Housing: Occupancy of government quarters is not available. Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT) Ability to Drive Safely (Motor Vehicles) Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (related to mobile equipment operation) Ability To Operate Safely (Non-Motor Vehicle) Operation of Motor Vehicles Work Practices (including keeping things neat, clean, and in order) SCREEN OUT: Experience that demonstrates the ability to perform work as a motor vehicle operator and assisting journey-level, or other higher graded workers; my experience included work such as operating gasoline or diesel-powered motor vehicles, the use of motor vehicles of a gross vehicle weight up to 10,000 pounds to transport material to and from the work site; operating pickup trucks, panel trucks, flatbed trucks, carryalls, sedans, crew pickup trucks, jeeps, and station wagons of a gross vehicle weight up to 10,000 pounds. Experience in the construction, repair and upkeep of wildlife boundary fences, as well as in equipment and building maintenance and trail and road repair projects. Been a crew leader and directed lower-level co-workers (laborers) in performing their duties. Work is spot-checked by supervisor and evaluated for quality and neatness. SCREEN OUT: This position requires that the incumbent possess a Driver's License. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions. Additional Information This announcement may be used to fill multiple vacancies. Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS). If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility. The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM. Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations. Physical Demands: Moderate physical effort may be required in making couplings between the vehicle and towed equipment. Considerable physical effort may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs. Requires to frequently lift items weighing over 50 pounds. Work may involve climbing of ladders, scaffolding, and working in and around power tools and equipment. Working Conditions: Incumbent is required to work outside and is exposed to extreme hot and cold temperatures. Operates vehicles in all types of traffic and weather on public roads and is exposed to dirt and fumes, and to the possibility of cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving or from falling objects when loading and unloading the vehicle
