Summary
About our opportunity: The City of Asheville invites you to apply to be a part of the 2024 school program leader. School programs at the Western North Carolina Nature Center focus on zoology, natural history, and NC Curriculum standards. We are looking for staff who are energetic and engaging, have strong leadership skills and the ability to model responsible mature behavior as they facilitate a variety of outdoor and indoor curriculum based environmental education programs for youth. This position will also conduct interpretation on grounds for a diverse audience. This includes, but is not limited to, serving as a roving naturalist and leading programming for the general public.
Pay: $17.00 per hour
Schedule: Shift hours will be 9:00am-1:00 pm and will work Monday-Friday. This position runs February 2024 through May 2024.
Benefits: This position will NOT be eligible for benefits, paid leave time (vacation, sick, holiday) nor participation in the retirement system.

Essential Duties and Responsibilites
Lead onsite field trips for youth grades Kindergarten through high school. Field trips are curriculum based and connected to North Carolina Standard Course of Study
Facilitate appropriate student behavior and group management while leading programs
Interact directly with nature center guests and ensure a positive guest experience
Engages with visitors (including children and adults) through interpretation activities included but not limited to a roving naturalist role, leading guests through hands-on stations and public programming
Follow proper procedures and guidelines when handling education animals (reptiles and amphibians) in public programming
Maintains a positive attitude and professional demeanor at all times
Assists in maintaining cleanliness of classroom and public facilities
Performs related tasks as required
Ability to connect guests to Appalachian fauna and flora
Education and Experience
Graduation from high school or equivalent
Experience teaching curriculum based environmental education programs for students of private, and public schools, and home school groups
Experience leading informal programs with school groups
Experience working with North Carolina Standard Course of Study
Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills
Experience working with the general public or experience in customer service
Experience using ambassador animals in educational programming
Experience and/or coursework in environmental/conservation education and interpretation
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
General knowledge of the methods of environmental education and interpretation
Abilities to lead outdoor programming in a variety of weather
Ability to provide educational opportunities for diverse audiences
Ability to connect with a diverse group of people in order to ensure positive guest experiences
Ability to provide educational opportunities for diverse audiences
Basic knowledge of natural history of Western North Carolina

Physical Ability : Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and prolonged standing, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).
Sensory Requirements : Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors : Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, water hazards, hazardous materials, toxic agents, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, firearms, violence, disease, pathogenic substances, or rude/irate customers.
